MacGyver Movie Moves Forward With ‘Saw’ Director James Wan

MacGyver is heading to the big screen. The project is still in the early development stages but it looks like New Line has a director in mind for the new MacGyver Movie.

James Wan, who was behind the original Saw and Insidious, has reportedly been tapped to helm a new movie based on the classic 80s show. New Line has been impressed with Wan’s work and the company is also very excited about his latest movie, The Conjuring.

Variety reports that Wan’s successes have made him the new go-to guy at New Line. A contract hasn’t been signed yet but Wan has apparently been chosen to direct the new MacGyver movie.

An early draft of a script for the new movie, written by Jason Richman, is currently being revised by Brian and Mark Gunn. Details about the plot are not available and there’s no word if Richard Dean Anderson will reprise his role.

Anderson played MacGyver, a secret agent known for his ingenuity, on the hit show from 1985-1992. The show was so popular, and sometimes so outlandish, that MacGyver actually became a verb in modern slang.

According to Urban Dictionary, to MacGyver is to “use ingenuity to fix or remedy a problem using only the tools available at hand.” It can also refer to “someone who can jump-start a truck with a cactus.”

MacGruber, an SNL character that spoofed the TV show, got his own movie in 2010.
