WWE Rumors: Is John Cena Starring In ‘Thor: Ragnarok’?

John Cena, one of the biggest stars in the WWE Universe, might be about to take a role in another major entertainment sphere: the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The 15-time WWE champion is rumored to star in Thor: Ragnarok, the third movie in the Thor series, according to the latest IMDb page for the movie, with Cena set to appear as himself.

Earlier reports suggested that Thor will face off against the toughest opponents from across the universe that Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) can find, according to Flickering Myth. Who better to battle Thor in a gladiator arena than John Cena?

As a close approximation of a real-life superhero and someone who rarely loses in a WWE ring without some serious cheating behind a referee’s back, Cena would be a fitting, somewhat believable representative of Earth to fight Thor, assuming Grandmaster is neglecting to choose actual superheroes to fight the Asgardian god.

If the rumors hold water, John Cena is joining an electric cast of major Marvel Cinematic Universe stars, including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, and, reportedly, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. Thor: Ragnarok also features Cate Blanchett, Goldblum, Sam Neill, Karl Urban, Tessa Thompson, and, returning to the Thor series, Anthony Hopkins as Odin and Jaimie Alexander as Sif.

Thor: Ragnarok wrapped production last month after filming in various locations in Australia.

It’s worth taking the rumors with a grain of salt, however. Neither John Cena nor director Taika Waititi or Marvel have confirmed that the WWE Superstar will appear in Thor: Ragnarok. Anyone can edit an IMDb page and while that site is often a source of early casting news, it’s easy for anyone to make up casting rumors by including an actor on a movie’s page even if they’re not actually appearing in it.

While John Cena is known for his tremendous work ethic — it’s not inconceivable that he’d fly to Australia after four days on the road for WWE to film a quick cameo — the wrestler has taken some time away from the ring lately to film the second season of his Fox reality show American Grit. There’s every chance that he could have taken some time before starting work on that show or a break from it to film a role in Thor: Ragnarok.

Cena has dabbled in acting during his WWE career, with starring roles in WWE Studios movies The Marine, 12 Rounds, Legendary, and The Reunion. His Hollywood career is picking up steam after his well-reviewed roles in the comedies Trainwreck and Sisters in 2015.

Rumors have swirled for the last few weeks that John Cena is preparing to make his return to the WWE ring in the very near future. However, as the Inquisitr reported, there are conflicting rumors on when he will actually appear on WWE television again.

Advertising for the December 26 house show at Madison Square Garden in New York City pits Cena against Dean Ambrose and WWE World Champion AJ Styles in a triple threat match. Yet, he might not actually return on TV until the Royal Rumble in January.

Reports suggested that Cena was upset with WWE over the returns of The Undertaker, whom Cena is widely expected to face at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando in a rumored retirement match for The Deadman, and Bill Goldberg after a 12-year absence. That could potentially delay John Cena’s return further, but it’d be surprising if he were not back in time for the Royal Rumble to start the build to WrestleMania.

Still, whatever might be happening or not with WWE, Cena has a thriving television and movie career that he can turn to if his relationship with Vince McMahon heads south.

Whether or not the movie features John Cena getting hit with Mjolnir while a referee is distracted, Thor: Ragnarok will be released on November 3, 2017.
