Amy Adams Confirms Redheads Have More Fun And Takes On A ‘Whisper Challenge’ From Jimmy Fallon

In Arrival, Amy Adams plays a highly talented linguist sent in to communicate with extraterrestrial visitors, so that may be why Adams was compelled to compete in Jimmy Fallon’s Whisper Challenge during a recent visit to The Tonight Show. While the Arrival star seemed to have a great time with Fallon, she recently revealed she’s enjoyed a resurgence in her career, ever since dying her hair red. Proving redheads actually have more fun than blondes, Amy Adams revealed that the dye job has noticeably bolstered her acting career in addition to any perks she may have noticed in her personal life.

Amy Adams Loves Being A Redhead

People revealed that Amy Adams’s career got a significant boost when the Arrival actress made the decision to dye her hair from strawberry-blonde to a fiery red color. At an event hosted by the New York Times, Adams said her chances of being cast increased, but also said that the types of roles she was being offered changed as well. Amy suggested that casting directors, either intentionally or unwittingly, were casting her for stereotypical roles, based on her hair color. When Adams moved from blonde to red, her opportunities got that much more interesting.

“Based on roles that I was getting, called in for, people were responding to certain types of characters with me as a blonde and the minute I went red, it was quirky and fun instead of flirtatious and dumb,” said 42-year-old Adams.

The Arrival actress went on to explain that she became fascinated by the way one aspect of a person’s personality can be the basis by which others judge her or him. Adams said it was interesting to see how everyone’s perceptions of her changed with the color of her hair.

Amy recalled the incident that caused her to change her hair color. Adams was starring opposite Sarah Lancaster, who was also blonde, but, unlike Amy, Sarah was tanned and had a fuller figure. Adams’ green eyes and signature freckles came into question when the director decided that one of the actresses would have to dye their hair, because he only wanted one blonde.

That was the moment Amy Adams went red.

“It really changed things up. People began to see me in a different way, for different roles,” said the Arrival star. “I don’t know if I can give credit to just the hair color, but maybe it did help people see me past blonde.”

Going red has also had its drawbacks, revealed Ms. Adams. She said she’s often mistaken for another redheaded actress, Isla Fisher. The Arrival star guessed all redheaded actresses under 5’5″ are often mistaken for one another.

Amy Adams met Isla Fisher for the first time when both actresses were up for the role of Brenda Strong in 2002’s Catch Me If You Can.

Arrival Star Amy Adams Proves Her Linguistic Skills In Jimmy Fallon’s Whisper Challenge

Even Amy’s mad translation skills in Arrival may not have prepared her for her visit to The Tonight Show, when, as Time reports, host Jinny Fallon dared her to compete in his Whisper Challenge. The game involved Adams wearing headphones, which drowned out any other sounds by blasting music directly into her ears. Meanwhile, Fallon sang a song and challenged Amy to determine the song by reading his lips.

Easy, right?

First up, Fallon sang Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger.”

“Something… for fashion?” asked the Arrival actress.

Next, Fallon and Adams switched places, but Jimmy was no better at guessing Amy’s song.

Amy sang, “Walk Like an Egyptian” from The Bangles.

“Rolling like a chick machine?” asked Fallon.

Arrival, starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker, premiered in theaters on Friday, November 11.
