FIU Tight End Jonnu Smith Out For Season After Pregnant Girlfriend Allegedly Burns Him With Boiling Water During Argument

Florida International Panthers senior tight end, Jonnu Smith, of Ocala, Florida, will be out for the season after sustaining multiple burn injuries to his “head, neck, back, shoulder, and arm” in a boiling water attack by his 20-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Mary Gaspar, according to the NBC Miami.

It was reported that on the night of October 31, an argument started between Smith and his girlfriend – who is five months pregnant with his child – after she complained about not getting enough attention in their relationship. When the couple returned to Smith’s dormitory, the argument soon turned physical when she allegedly boiled water and poured it on him.

Afterward, she began hitting Smith with her hands when he “didn’t react strongly enough” when she poured boiling water on the FIU football player, according to a report.

Due to Smith’s injuries, he was not able to play in “last week’s loss to Western Kentucky” and it has been ruled that he will be out for rest of the season and a career in the NFL may also be in jeopardy.

Students at Florida International University were outraged after learning a football’s star career may be over after his girlfriend threw boiling water on him during an argument.

Jocelyn Woolbright, who is a junior at Florida International University, stated that the incident is “extremely ridiculous and it’s very sad because he has burn scars for the rest of his life.”

Another FIU student, Benjamin O’Flaherty, – who is a freshman – added that “I’m very surprised that someone would go to those lengths to try to get attention and hurt someone. It’s not going to make them want to be around that person anymore.”

“It’s baffling to me the fact that she was mad that he was not showing enough attention to someone who was just trying to provide for them,” said FIU freshman Maliq Lawrence.

“One of the stars of the football team, trying to make a name for himself and protect his family and she took that away from him.”

Matt Anthony on Facebook wrote, “The vast majority of reported domestic abuse is male or female, which absolutely disgusts me. Any true ‘man’ wouldn’t lay their hands on a female in a violent manner or without explicit consent if it’s in the sexual sphere for lack of a better term.”

“However, despite it being uncommon, domestic violence is a two-way street as an ESPN article showed. Don’t just stop domestic violence against women, stop it against everyone.”

“This man did not deserve to be permanently scarred with burns or to be assaulted furthermore by his companion,” Anthony continued.

“I don’t know all the facts but still, we’re all better than this kind of stuff.”

Prior to the boiling water attack, Smith would have most likely been considered for the 2017 NFL drafts as he was the “third in FIU history with 17 career touchdown catches, and fourth with 175 receptions. He caught 39 passes for 441 yards and three touchdowns this season.”

According to the Fansided, Smith’s best season came about in 2014 during his sophomore year at Florida International University, “receiving yards (710) and touchdowns (eight). In nine games this season, Smith will finish with 39 receptions for 441 yards and three touchdowns.”

Two days after the boiling water attack on the FIU football player, Gaspar, who was named the Donkey of the Day by Charlamagne Tha God at the Breakfast Club, was arrested on charges of felony aggravated battery.

After entering a not guilty plea, Gaspar was released from the county jail on a “pretrial release order.”

Smith has since been released from the hospital and it was reported that he was seen back on FIU campus.
