Britney Spears And Madonna: Most Famous Collaborations

Britney Spears and Madonna have a huge amount of respect for each other. One only has to see Britney’s recent birthday tribute to the Queen of Pop.

In 2008, Madonna told E! Online that she really respected Britney Spears and that she was the artist of choice for her daughter Lourdes, who was then 11-years old. Madonna and Britney have made some appearances together in videos, at the MTV VMAs, and in a concert. Let’s take a look at some of their most talked about collaborations.

MTV VMA’s (2003)

Who can ever forget when Madonna performed “Hollywood” with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV VMAs in 2003? Actually, a lot of people instantly forgot this. What they do remember, however, is when Madonna kissed Britney Spears toward the end of the performance. She also kissed Christina Aguilera, but nobody cared.

The moment where Madonna smooches Spears and the camera pans to a confused-looking Justin Timberlake has become part of pop culture history. At the time, however, it was very controversial. Many said the “kiss” was proof that Madonna and Britney were fading and that it would be the final nail in the coffin known as their careers. However, both Madonna and Britney Spears went on to produce several more hit singles while selling millions of concert tickets.

“Me Against The Music” (2003)

Right after the iconic MTV performance, Britney Spears and Madonna collaborated on this song and video, which kicked off Britney Spears’ album campaign for In The Zone. The song, which barely climbed into the top 40 on Billboard‘s Hot 100, was poorly received. A post from Pop Dirt in October of 2003 summarized how many thought about the collaboration.

“You could say that again — Britney and Madonna ‘against’ music, because the song is simply a cacophony of irrational noises. It has no melody, its lyrics have no sense and it’s really annoying. Madonna and Spears, for all their accomplishments in the world of pop, may both end up being remembered ONLY for that scandalous kiss … and this horrific song.”

The reaction to the video that Britney and Madonna made was even worse. Perhaps the Mad TV parody of “Me Against The Music” is more famous than the video itself.

“Human Nature” (2008)

In the aftermath of Britney Spears’ breakdown, Madonna reached out to her kiss partner and asked her to appear in this backdrop video for the song “Human Nature,” which Madonna performed on her “Sticky and Sweet Tour” in 2008-2009. The clip, which has the audience mistaking Britney as Madonna trapped in an elevator for most of the video, is about the media’s treatment of female pop superstars.

In 1995, “Human Nature” served as Madonna’s middle finger to her critics, who treated Madonna like a pariah in the early 1990s. Madonna believes that Britney Spears received the same treatment she did and the media cared more about tearing her down than helping her back up.

In the end, we know the female is Britney Spears, not Madonna. As she exits the elevator, we hear Britney exclaim, “It’s Britney bi***.”

Dodger Stadium Appearance (2008)

On November 6, 2008, Madonna played to 50,000 fans at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CA. Britney made a surprise appearance while Madonna performed “Human Nature” with Britney’s backdrop video. Britney’s appearance was rather tame, and some aren’t sure if she actually sang into the mic or not. Still, the stadium went wild and it set the stage for Britney’s comeback album Circus. It’s important to note that Britney’s ex, Justin Timberlake, also made an appearance at Madonna’s Dodger Stadium show and sang “4 Minutes,” his duet with Madonna that hit No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 earlier that year.
