Nina Dobrev Will Return For ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Final Season – ‘A Promise Was Made’ Claims Creator Julie Plec

Nina Dobrev’s time on The Vampire Diaries might not be over after all.

Series creator Julie Plec recently hinted that Dobrev will be back in action for the eighth and final season of The CW’s hit show. Will her prediction come true?

According to UPI, Plec dropped the news during an interview at Comic-Con in San Diego last weekend.

“Not to put too much pressure on anything Nina Dobrev, but a promise was made. An emotional promise that I’d like to see come to life. You heard it here. There have been friendship promises made, and now we’ll see if we can deliver on them.”

Dobrev exited The Vampire Diaries after Season 6. Thankfully, Plec and her team of writers didn’t eliminate her character’s storyline at the time. Instead, they left room for Elena Gilbert to return some day.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Dobrev has faced rumors of her return to the show.

Back in August, Mike Pedowitz, the president of The CW, told fans that Dobrev was always welcome to make a cameo whenever she wants.

“We would have loved Nina to say,” he admitted. “She did a great job for the six years she was on the show. She is welcome back anytime she wants to come back.”

Since her departure, Dobrev has been actively seeking roles in major movies. So far, the actress has landed parts in Vin Diesel’s xXx: The Return of Xander Cage and Domhnall Gleeson’s Crash Pad.

Dobrev has yet to confirm her part in Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries, though Plec did admit that it will be hard to watch the show finally end next year.

“It’s so rare for a show to get to last this long,” she stated. “I will miss it terribly, but I’m so proud to be here to see it to its proper end.”

Fans got a little taste of Nina Dobrev’s return last season when she voiced a part in the Season 7 finale.

According to Wet Paint, Zach Roerig (Matt Donovan) is confident that the voice over is only the first phase in Dobrev’s return.

“At the end of the day, we’d love to have her back,” the actor admitted. “This show wouldn’t be what it is without her.”

Meanwhile, Unreality TV is reporting that the only stumbling block on Plec’s end is figuring out how to incorporate it.

“There is nothing written in stone, but Nina made a promise when she left that she would come back and be part of the goodbye, and I intend on holding her to that,” Plec explained. “I’m I’m sure she intends on living up to it as well. We just have to figure it out: the how, the when, the what.”

“But it would be a real tragedy if we couldn’t bring that story back around full-circle,” she concluded.

According to Christian Times, the new season of The Vampire Diaries will comprise of 16 episodes. Production for the new season is currently underway, which means the window is quickly closing for Plec to get Dobrev on board.

Based on Dobrev’s voice over last season, which was a new recording and not something they pulled from previous seasons, it is clear that Plec still maintains a working relationship with the actress.

Hopefully, Plec can convince Dobrev to return next season, even if it is only for a short cameo during the finale. After all, how else could the story end without giving Elena a proper send-off?

The final season of The Vampire Diaries is scheduled to premiere October 21 on The CW.
