‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Tops List Of Most Anticipated Movies Of 2016 — What Else Made The List?

Following the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which continues to shatter records at the box office, another Star Wars-related movie has been making waves with moviegoers. According to Movie Web, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has officially been named the most anticipated film of 2016 by Fandango. While this is not particularly shocking, the order of the other movies that made the list is surprising.

Following the next Star Wars film, other films feature in the list include Finding Dory, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Untitled Next Bourne Chapter, Captain America: Civil War, Star Trek Beyond, Independence Day: Resurgence, X-Men: Apocalypse, Zoolander 2, and The Jungle Book.

While Batman v Superman’s inclusion near the top of the list is understandable, it is interesting to note how low the upcoming Captain America movie was ranked.

At the same time, what isn’t surprising is how many people are eagerly waiting for the next Star Wars movie to come out. With that in mind, Dave Karger, the chief correspondent for Fandango, shared a few words in regards to the most anticipated movie of 2016.

“Film fans already know what they want for their 2016 holiday present, as they count down the days till December 16 when the next Star Wars story opens in theaters,” he stated in the release. “The new year promises plenty of action, star turns and first-time comic book adaptations to satisfy a wide range of consumers and to continue the momentum of 2015’s banner year for moviegoing.”

In addition to ranking the most anticipated movie, Fandango also named Melissa McCarthy as the most anticipated actress of 2016. McCarthy is set to play the lead role in the new Ghostbuster’s movie. At the same time, Matt Damon topped the list as the most anticipated actor with his part in the new Jason Bourne movie.

Meanwhile, Newsarama has officially ranked the most anticipated movies of 2016 in a slightly different order than Fandango. Topping this list is Captain America: Civil War, which is set to hit theaters on May 6. Following at a close second is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, scheduled to open on March 25, while Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is at the number three spot.

Although the two lists vary slightly, these three movies are still among the top in both lists. Given the popularity of each of these franchises, there is little doubt that Batman v Superman, Captain America, and Rogue One will be among the highest grossing in the new year.

That being said, Movie Insider has conducted its own poll of the most anticipated movies of 2016. Interestingly, fans who voted on the site ranked the movies as follows: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Deadpool, Independence Day: Resurgence, Captain America: Civil War, Kung Fu Panda 3, Assassin’s Creed, Finding Dory, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and X-Men: Apocalypse.

Batman v Superman received the majority of votes with a little over 14,000, while Deadpool managed to gain 11,000 votes. For a comparison, Rogue One was fairly low on the list with 2,700 votes. This total came in just under Suicide Squad, which got 2,781 votes.

Although the lists may vary, it is clear that fans will have a good variety of movies to look forward to in 2016. Whether or not the year is as successful at the box office as 2015 is yet to be seen. However, with so many big-budget movies making their way into the lineup, the new year may prove to be the highest grossing yet.
