Elizabeth Olsen Dumped Fiancé Boyd Holbrook On The Day His Best Friend Died

Talk about a bad day. In a new interview for Man of the World’s cover story, actor Body Holbrook opened up about his split from Elizabeth Olsen, revealing that she called off their engagement on the same day his best friend died.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s younger sister, Elizabeth Olsen, and Body Holbrrok started dating in 2012, and became engaged in 2014. However, in January, Us Weekly revealed that the pair had ended their relationship. Not long after, Elizabeth was photographed without her engagement ring. Although it has been nearly a year since the pair decided to go their separate ways, Holbrook took the opportunity to explain the toll the break up, which he said felt more like a divorce, took on him.

“On the same day that my best friend died, I got a call from my girl to tell me it was over,” Holbrook revealed.

Although Holbrook didn’t mention Olsen by name, the pair were dating when his best friend, New York-based photographer David Armstrong, died in October 2014 at the age of 60.

“David was the first person in my life to encourage me,” Holbrook said. “He told me to do everything I wanted to do. No one had ever told me that before. He was a very important figure in my life. Important figure is not even close to what he was.”

Holbrook said Armstrong’s death was devastating, and it took him a while to learn how to cope with the fact that he was gone and appropriately grieve for the loss of his friend.

“I was consumed with my own personal depression, my own personal scenario at the time,” he continued. “What happened over the course of the journey is that I started noticing the different types of trees. I started noticing the beauty, the details.”

Since their split, Elizabeth Olsen, 26, has been rumored to be dating her 34-year-old I Saw the Light co-star, Tom Hiddleston. While the pair have never officially announced their coupledom, Elizabeth did talk about their chemistry during an interview with MTV News at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

“Tom and I have been wanting to work with each other for a while,” she said at the time. “We’ve known each other for about four years, and we met doing a chemistry read for an audition and we were like, ‘Oh my God, this would be so much fun if we worked with each other.'”

“The intention is always to check in on each other and measure them in a way and we were like, ‘Oh, we’ll work really well together,'” she continued. “That’s fun as an actor to find someone who you have very similar language with. So that was the impulse in 2011.”

When reporters asked Elizabeth directly about the dating rumors, she neither confirmed nor denied them, simply stating, “people can think what they want to think.”

“I mean, we definitely are friends and we’ve known each other for about four years,”she said. “We happened to be at a restaurant at a wrong time having dinner. We all go out to dinner… No, [we aren’t together]. I mean, people can think what they want to think.”

I Saw the Light opened in theaters Nov. 27.
