Chris Brown Defends His ‘White Hot Holidays’ Performance, Says He Was Feeling ‘Under The Weather’

Chris Brown has been hard at work promoting the impending release of his upcoming studio album, Royalty, but is Brown’s busy schedule taking a toll on his voice? After being met with criticism over his performance during Teraji and Terrence’s White Hot Holidays special, Brown took to Twitter yesterday to admit that he’s been feeling “under the weather.”

Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard hosted their holiday special alongside fellow Empire cast members Jussie Smollett and Bryshere Y. Gray Wednesday night to perform classic holiday hits like “Joy To The World” and “All You Need Is Love.”

The special also featured star-studded performances from the likes of Mary J. Blige, John Legend, and Jamie Foxx, but it appears Chris Brown is dominating the conversation surrounding last night’s televised special for his rendition of “This Christmas,” after fans began pointing out that Brown seemed to be a little off during his performance.

According to VH1, fans took to Twitter shortly after Brown’s performance to question whether or not Chris had been lip-syncing to his mashup of his new single, “Back To Sleep,” and “This Christmas,” while others felt that Brown was simply “struggling to get the notes out” during his performance.

One fan writes, “Y’all know I love me some #chrisbrown but that was not a good performance,” while another asks, “Why tf is he lip syncing!????!!!! #Breezy #ChrisBrown.”

Soon after fans began bombarding Brown with questions regarding his performance, Chris Brown took to Twitter to clear up rumors that suggested he wasn’t singing live, or was “high,” before going onstage.

“Grind season been in full effect. Been under the weather,” Brown tweeted to his 15 million Twitter followers last night, prompting some fans to further express their skepticism regarding Brown’s reasoning behind his lackluster performance.

In addition, Brown extended his thanks to Taraji P. Henson for allowing him to serve as a guest on the holiday special, prompting Henson to speak out against the criticism facing Chris Brown after his performance, the Wrap reports.

“Y’all know what @chrisbrown is capable of vocally? HE SHOWED UP W/LOVE IN HIS HEART PERIOD,” Henson argued on Twitter, adding, “Happy #WhiteHotHolidays????”

While Chris Brown has since deleted his post about not feeling well during last night’s show, Brown did share another message expressing his gratitude for the “opportunity” to perform amid the ongoing backlash from fans.

“MJ didn’t score 50 every night. I’m just glad I was given the opportunity. #HappyHolidays.”

Chris Brown’s humble reaction to fans’ criticisms of his performance comes just days after the singer gave fans an inside look into his most recent charitable act on Instagram. Brown took to the social media site on Sunday to express his desire to give back to the community by gifting a former domestic violence victim and her three children a new car and toys for the holiday season.

In his post, Brown explains that he’s been “selfish, arrogant, and cold hearted” in the past, and now wants to “bless and inspire so many others” by giving back to those in need.

Despite the outpouring of praise for Brown’s selfless act, one fan lashed out at Chris Brown’s social media post by implying that Brown was only trying to promote his album and receive praise from fans in regard to his charitable act, the Shade Room reports.

Chris Brown was swift in responding to fans who criticized his good deed, telling them that he doesn’t “need a pat on the back” and that if it were other celebrities like Beyoncé, Jay Z, or Kanye West promoting their charitable contributions, nobody would be vocalizing their criticisms.
