‘Supergirl’ Star Melissa Benoist’s Real-Life Husband And ‘Glee’ Co-Star Blake Jenner To Play Her Love Interest

Some real life chemistry and a potential Glee reunion is on the way in the first season of Supergirl. According to E! Online, Melissa Benoist is set to be joined in the series by her real-life husband, Blake Jenner. As if that wasn’t enough, Jenner will also play a love interest for Benoist’s character. He formerly starred alongside Benoist on the hit musical series, Glee.

Jenner has been cast in the role of Adam Foster in the series and is set to make his first appearance in 2016. Foster is a somewhat unknown individual from Cat Grant’s (Calista Flockhart) past life, and his appearance in National City will create a little ripple in Kara’s relationship with her employer.

Benoist and Jenner married earlier this year after being engaged since the summer of 2013. The pair first met while working on Glee together, and their characters, Marley and Ryder, were featured as a romantic couple that never managed to work things out.

Although this potential romance might be met with some resistance by fans who want to see Kara and James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) get together, Jenner’s inclusion on the show will certainly make things interesting. Especially if the real-life couple manage to bring some real-life chemistry to the screen, which might even satisfy those Glee fans who always wanted to see things work out between Marley and Ryder.

That being said, Benoist recently told E! Online that her greatest desire for her character is to be an inspiration for people and provide an escape from the realities of the real world.

“I just would like her journey to be something that any person could relate to and/or be affected by and inspired by,” she stated in the interview. “I think part of the draw of the comic book genre is that it is a way to escape and be inspired by something and be something greater than yourself: A strong being that can accomplish the unthinkable.”

At the same time, Benoist admitted that part of what makes the show work is how human her character’s struggles turn out to be, despite her superhero abilities. “But also what I love about her is that she struggles and the ebb and flow of her life is really human,” she explained. “I just hope that people can relate to it.”

According to Movie Pilot, it is this vulnerability that has helped to translate into a successful first season for the series, which is significant considering viewers are only a few episodes in. Not only has humanity made her character more relatable, but it has also showed that she is not invincible to everything thrown her way.

In fact, the show has done a great job in balancing her powers and showing her struggles from the viewpoint of a female. In contrast to the typical superhero TV show that focuses on a male’s perspective, Supergirl has the chance to portray a different perspective to saving the world.

While Supergirl could very easily overwhelm its viewers with feminist overtones, it does a great job in addressing these complicated issues by making things relatable to all walks of life. That being said, Supergirl does have its feminism element, as Benoist aptly put it, “I think what’s feminist about it is that it’s for everyone. She has all the same powers [Superman] does.”

Fans can hope Supergirl’s success will translate into more series based on female superheroes. Given the popularity of the show so far, there is little doubt this will happen.

The first season of Supergirl continues Monday nights on CBS.
