One Direction’s ‘Perfect’ Lyrics: Harry Styles Confirms Song Is About Taylor Swift

One Direction’s Harry Styles confirmed what many Directioners suspected: the second single off Made in the A.M., “Perfect,” could well be about Taylor Swift! The song, which he co-wrote with bandmate Louis Tomlinson, includes lyrics such as “If you’re looking for someone to write your breakup songs about, baby, I’m perfect.”

The band was speaking with James Corden at London’s Apple Music event, and Styles finally gave fans an answer they can be satisfied with. It’s not the first time 1D has been asked to clarify the meaning of their extremely popular tunes, but it could well be the first time they are so honest about it.

Corden made obvious references to Taylor Swift in his question when he said, “Now look, I don’t want to have any Bad Blood about this. If you don’t want to talk about it, we can just Shake It Off.”

Both are references to songs from Swift’s fourth album, 1989, which features many tunes that have supposedly been inspired by the singer’s short but intense relationship with Styles in 2012.

Styles lets out a little smirk and laughs during Corden’s question, which has been interpreted to confirm fans’ suspicions that One Direction’s latest piece is indeed about country superstar Taylor Swift.

Entertainment Tonight journalist Samantha Harris had the same opportunity in Belfast, Ireland, and asked Styles directly if the song was about Taylor. He admitted personal experience was really important in the process of songwriting.

“It doesn’t necessarily have to be so literal,” Styles explained.

“People can interpret a lot of different things in different ways. And I’m not going to tell someone it’s not about what they think it’s about, because I think the whole point is — it’s about whatever it means to you.”

So is it or isn’t it? It seems pretty obvious that One Direction is finally learning from Taylor Swift, who has used many of her previous romances to create her most successful tunes. When her fourth album, 1989, was released last year, fans discovered more than one song was inspired by Swift’s brief relationship with the famous One Directioner.

“Shake It Off” was said to have very clear references to Harry Styles’ fling at the time with Kendall Jenner.

But what may be seen as digs from Swift and Styles are also what’s allowed them to be and remain so famous, and they are probably both grateful for it.

When asked what he thought of 1989 and of all the songs written about him, Styles replied, “She’s really good, so they’re good songs. I’m really lucky in that sense.”

He added, “We write from personal experience, and I think everyone does, so it would be hypocritical of us to be like, ‘Oh you can’t write about us.'”

Styles and Swift only dated for a few months towards the end of 2012, and both have penned songs about their relationships. Swift has also spoken out about how she truly felt during this time, as reported in the Independent.

Before performing “Out of the Woods” to close her Grammy Museum exhibit in September, Swift introduced the song with these words.

“The number one feeling I felt in the whole relationship was anxiety. Because it felt very fragile, it felt very tentative. And it always felt like, ‘Okay, what’s the next road block? What’s the next thing that’s gonna deter this? How long do we have before this turns into just an awful mess and we break up? Is it a month? Is it three days?”

Harry Styles may be four years younger than his ex, but his list of celebrity romances has been growing longer since his breakup with Swift, who herself admitted dating him should come with a health warning.

Taylor Swift and DJ/producer Calvin Harris are believed to still be going strong after more than eight months together, although they haven’t been spotted together for a while. But this latest post on Swift’s Instagram account, of a photo taken by Calvin Harris, should end rumors for a little while.
