Amy Poehler Stole Tom Hanks’ Belongings When They Broke Up, He Says

Amy Poehler may have just split from comedian Nick Kroll, but there’s another funny guy in her past, and according to him, she took off with some things that weren’t hers in the breakup.

Poehler, who aimed a joke at Tom Hanks during the 2014 Golden Globe Awards, garnered some faux-ire from the actor from his spot in the audience, prompting fans to wonder what was going on between them.

“Congratulations to all the wonderful actors nominated tonight. From the amazing Chiwetel Ejiofor to the stunning Lupita Nyong’o to American treasure Tam Honks. D****t, I know I was going to screw that up,” Poehler said onstage.

When Tom gave Amy an exasperated look from the crowd, viewers (perhaps rightly) couldn’t tell whether he was being serious or if he was just being the amazing actor he is. But he (sort of) cleared it up during a Tumblr Q&A session, saying he and Amy Poehler were an item back in the early days of their respective careers.

“I haven’t spoken to Amy since we broke up in the ’80s. We shared a small apartment in Eagle Rock for about six months. Before I met Rita, of course. Amy didn’t like my dog, and she stole some of my good records when she moved out (without so much as a goodbye). I’m happy for her success, but would not walk across the street to say hello to May Epolher, as I know her… Amy, you owe me Running on Empty by Jackson Brown and The Who Live at Leeds,” Tom said.

Amy, who dated Nick Kroll for two years before their recent split, was married to fellow actor Will Arnett previously, and shares two sons with him. According to a source at Us Weekly, Amy and Nick are good friends who couldn’t make things work around their insanely busy schedules. For Amy — who has recently been splitting her time between Wet Hot American Summer, various film projects, and her company, Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls — the breakup was particularly difficult because it was the first relationship she’d been in since her divorce.

“Unfortunately, they just couldn’t make the relationship work with their schedules… They really tried, but it just wasn’t realistic anymore. They were spending more time apart than together,” the source said.

As for Tom Hanks, he’s been making headlines lately for photos of him dressed as hero Captain Sully for the upcoming film about his dramatic landing in the Hudson River in 2009. Hanks takes on a dramatically different look for the role, sporting white hair and a white mustache in order to accurately portray the pilot.

Amy Poehler’s biggest project this year was Pixar’s Inside Out, which drew huge crowds to theaters and garnered love from all over the world as a smart, funny, honest portrayal of emotions. Her next highly-anticipated work is Sisters, which she collaborated on with bestie Tina Fey. For Poehler, the film — which is about two adult sisters who decide to throw an epic party before their parents sell their childhood home — was a chance to get a little wild.

“My character kind of loses her mind as the party goes on. I got to break through ceilings and watch trees smash through houses and drunkenly mouth off to a cop. It’s fantasy camp for a 40-something-year-old woman,” Amy told Vanity Fair. “Just like in the movie it got progressively more trashed. By the end, it really did smell totally gross.”

Amy and Tina Fey debuted the film’s trailer on The Tonight Show with their old SNL pal Jimmy Fallon and played a highly amusing game of True Confessions, where they told outrageous tales meant to trip up one another.
