Alicia Silverstone Defends Mouth-Feeding Son, Says “It’s Natural”
Last month, we reported that Alicia Silverstone posted a video of herself pre-chewing food for her son, and then feeding him mouth-to-mouth. This strange (and let’s just admit it, disgusting) habit has gotten Alicia Silverstone back into the limelight, and the actress herself now answers to all of the criticism her video has earned her.
“I can understand that it would make some people feel uncomfortable, possibly, because it’s new to them,” Silverstone admitted in an ET interview on April 27. “But I do want to let you know that this has been going on for thousands of years, still going on all over the place and it’s natural.”
The “fact” that this has been normal for thousands of years appears to have been made up on the spot, as it doesn’t quite explain everyone’s shock and disgust in reacting to her feeding method. Nevertheless, she posted a video on her website, “The Kind Life“, showing the practice with her 10-month-old, Bear, and honestly didn’t seem to make much ado about it. It really does seem like she regards the practice as “normal”.
The video has become a viral sensation with just under 2 million views on Youtube. The original blog post that accompanied the video on her website said, “He literally crawls across the room to attack my mouth if I’m eating,” adding, “This video was taken about a month or 2 ago when he was a bit wobbly. Now he is grabbing my mouth to get the food!”
Despite her critics, Silverstone still stands by her method, saying, “It’s a part of the weaning process, so while I’m still breast-feeding it’s just a way to introduce him to food when he doesn’t have teeth and things like that and he can’t chew.”
I guess that does make sense. But it still makes me uncomfortable.
On another note, Alicia Silverstone does still act, and will be seen this October in the comedy film Butter, starring Twilight‘s Ashley Green and Wolverine‘s Hugh Jackman.

I think it's a contest between celebrities to see who can come up with the most f***** up name and the most f***** up antics with their kids. Some adopt kids from other countries because of tightening immigration laws (they need someone to clean their toilets), others make up stupid names that these kids have to live with for the rest of their lives and now Silverstone is chewing her baby's food for him….stupid. Considering that many celebrity parents completely suck, it's refreshing to see a mother that truly cares for her baby. Call it what you will "gross, disgusting" this practice occurs throughout the world today. Babies can't get all their vitamins and minerals from breast milk alone. In fact many scientists and doctors have said that besides the nutritional value it also improves the baby's immune system in a good way by exposing the baby to minute amounts of bacteria. That gives the baby a leg up on others later and keeps baby from getting sick.

Yes, because reading and educating yourself on how others around the world care and nuture their babies and taking on their ways of life lacks all common sense. How dare she take the time to develop other ways of living beyond the modern way. I mean, a mother feeding her child and providing enzymes to help that child break down his food is so awful. With all the appliances we have in this day and age to process and chop up food for babies, I still don't get why she'd chew it up first and then give it to her baby. Especially considering all the things that can be spread from mouth to mouth that way. I realize at some point our parents may have shared a piece of food they've eaten, but I can't ever recall my parents or even my grandparents feeding me like…that. O_o But then again, my mother had one of those handheld salad shooter kits from the 80's. If she wanted me to have something, she could mash it up with that thing. But hey, her kid, her rules I guess. I just thank goodness for my Ninja Bullet. If I have kids, I'm covered.

My aunt used to do this to my cousin and it has been proven that it can cause major problems for the child. The Doctors asked her to stop several times and it was not until he got sick that she finally listened.

I have a question for her, who else feeds him this way? if you, re not there for him? Is this for his whole life, is he going to be in school and you feed him this way in front of everyone? I breastfed my kids and sometimes its hard to wean them from certain behaviors , this may cause some trouble down the road.also when we first chew our food, don't we take most of the vitamins out of it? I find nothing wrong with her "mouth feeding" her son or the fact that she is still breast feeding him. If he is 10-12 months old, he should have some teeth to chew his own food. I agree that it is very unusual and my question is when he gets older and thinks this is the way he should eat, what will he do at school? Attack the teacher's mouth to eat? She needs to stop this practice before he gets much older and start feeding him with utensils. This practice will only confuse the child. I agree. A child needs to learn how to chew things, even if they just gum it. Here's a novel idea. Instead of having your child eat your chewed food out of your mouth (that grosses me out on so many levels), you can put your food in a food processor and give it to them that way.

Yes I have. I was a Primate Zookeeper while attending college and most of the Primates did quite well with eating their own feces. Some of scientists on staff could give many reasons while this was good for the animals in the wild. One of course is the moisture contained in the feces that could be recycled during famine. Now the Primates had plenty of water available, but they sure liked the taste of their excrement. I suppose there were humans who practiced this in the past and maybe even today.
Go ahead, chew your food, give it orally to your infants and eat crap, my child grew up healthy without either practice.

Yes Alicia is actually right. Many cultures in the past and present use this method to feed their young. My grandmother fed me this way its a part of her ( and many others) culture. But when feeding my kids I used a food processor. To each their own.

I can't remember which tribe,but an American tribe of Native Americans did that many years ago. So yes this form of feeding a child has been around a long time.I had read that there are mothers in Africa that feed their babies this way also.As long as the baby is nourished and loved, whose business is it that Alicia Silverstone chooses to feed her child her way.

You can't be serious. This is not normal human behavior. Never in history have humans been shown to feed their children through the means of mouth feeding. This is a regressive tactic reverting to a lower brain instinct and extreme urge to be different. I don't particularly care if she does it, but to accept this as normal or a good example is absurd. We are humans, not penguins, if we want to tell ourselves that penguins and their genetic advancements have come further than we have then I will consider her behavior to be more acceptable.

My son llived solely on nursing for one year. I got critisized by my sister because he was a fat baby. He stopped on his own when he got teeth and I no longer needed to feed him. He loved food I made for him. For this kook to say she needs to prechew his food is ridiculous. He attacks her mouth is outrageous! He WILL have trouble "weaning" because he already knows how to go for Mommy's mouth. If I was her husband, I would have real problems being intimate with her. Somehow, I still think she does it because it is a real turn on for HER.
