Corey Burns: Father Who Brutally Beat, Burned 10-Month-Old Daughter With Charcoal Grill Learns His Fate

Different types of child abuse cases are reported around the country on a daily basis, but a recent case is unlike anything most have ever read about. Now, a father has learned his fate for the horrific torture of his infant daughter.

Corey Burns’ 10-month-old daughter suffered what prosecutors have described as “absolute torture.” Now, he has learned his fate for the ongoing, agonizing torture his poor daughter suffered. On Thursday, June 25, Burns was sentenced to 30 years behind bars. The 21-year-old father gave a brief statement of apology for the heinous crimes he committed that led to baby’s death. “I apologize for my actions,” he said. “I take full responsibility for my actions. And that’s it, judge.”

Although he’s apologized for his actions, sadly, the horrific damage has already been done. “There are no words that encompass the level of depravity and the inhumanity that was shown to this child over a short period of time,” Assistant District Attorney Matthew Torbenson said.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the baby and her mother, Chazzidy White, 22, relocated from Texas to Wisconsin in late October of 2014. Just days after their arrival, White began working, and Burns became the baby’s full-time caregiver, which is when things took a horrific turn for the worse. Throughout the month of November, the baby suffered relentless torture that her mother did nothing to stop.

Channel 3000 reports that baby’s thighs were “wasting away” when she arrived at Children’s Hospital last November. It was reported that she had extensive injuries, including a burn pattern on her back that resembled the lines on a charcoal grill in their kitchen. In addition to severe burns in her mouth and burns on her legs that looked as if she had been skinned, she also had bites, bruises, and severe brain injuries as a result of being “violently shaken, slammed down, and thrown,” according to investigative reports. Approximately 15 percent of the baby’s body was burned.

Although Burns’ sordid childhood, which also consisted of horrific abuse, was taken into consideration, Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Rebecca Dallet still had little remorse for him, insisting that his vile actions were inexcusable regardless of what he endured as a child.

“You took a child who was already severely burned over her legs, her lips, who has bite marks and all of these injuries to her body, who is no longer sitting up, who is not making eye contact… and is basically laying there,” Judge Dallet said. “And you put her on a grill.” She added, “This was torture, absolute torture of your daughter, and it went on for many, many days,” she said. “I see a lot of child abuse cases in here. I see a lot of cases of burns. I have never seen anything like this.”

Burns and White were both charged for torture the baby suffered. Burns’ sentence follows White’s guilty plea, entered back in April. According to NBC-15, she was charged with child neglect and failing to prevent child abuse. She was sentenced to two years in prison. After her release, she will also have five years of extended supervision.
