British MEP wants UEFA to overturn 36 year old Cup Winners’ Cup final

British Member of the European Parliament Richard Corbett has asked Uefa, the soccer’s European governing body, to overturn Leeds United’s defeat to AC Milan in the 1973 European cup winners’ cup final (now known as Champions League).

According to Corbett, AC Milan bribed the Greek referee Christos Michas before the match. Leeds United lost the Cup Winners’ Cup final 1-0 on a very controversial goal – Luciano Chiarugi scored on an indirect freekick and Leeds player Norman Hunter was sent off. Michas was subsequently banned from refereeing by UEFA and investigated by the Greece Football Association.

Richard Corbett started his campaign in 2006, but when he launched an online petition two weeks ago, things started to happen. He plans on presenting the 15,000 signatures his petition has attracted to UEFA on 16 May, the 36th anniversary of the match.

According to UEFA statues it is unable to investigate a match older than 10 years and it also wants Corbett to produce fresh evidence of match fixing.

You can sign Richard Corbetts petition on his website.
