Teacher Fired Over Trayvon Martin Fundraiser

brooke harris

MICHIGAN, PONTIAC – Brooke Harris, a teacher at the Pontiac Academy for Excellence Middle School in Pontiac, Michigan, was fired recently for helping students with a fundraiser for Trayvon Martin.

Harris said that she was was fired after supporting a group of students who were planning a wear-a-hoodie-to-school day in order to raise money for Martin’s family. Harris told ABC that she was confused by her dismissal since she did “everything by the book.”

Harris said:

“I was told I was a bad teacher, that I was being unprofessional, that I’m being paid to teach, not to be an activist. When I tried to defend myself, it was construed as insubordination.”

Superintendent Jacqueline Cassell didn’t comment on the teacher’s dismissal but did say that she does not oppose activism. Cassell did say, however, that the wear-a-hoodie-to-school event would have distracted students from their studies.

Cassell said:

“I’m a child of the civil rights movement (but) this is not the time in the school year (for a protest). In every situation, there are work rules… When rules are violated, there are consequences.”

Boston.com reports that the idea for the hoodie fundraiser came from the students after Harris asked her students to write an editorial about Martin’s death. The students wanted to ask the school’s administrators if they could pay $1 each to wear a hoodie to school. The Pontiac Academy for Excellence has a dress code but often holds fundraisers where students are allowed to “dress down” in order to raise money for a cause.

Jerri Katzerman, the Southern Poverty Law Center’s deputy legal director, said:

“Schools should encourage teachers to challenge their students to think critically about the world around them, rather than condemn them. What sort of message does it send to young children when their teacher is fired for helping them understand the world around them?”

Why was she not suspended instead of fired? WAS this teacher a good teacher or is the administration using this activism as a way to fire her for other infractions?

  2. Anonymous

She was supposed to be teaching, not engaging in community activism. No wonder our schools aren't teaching the students. She should have been spending her time with the students studying math, history, foreign language, geometry, philosophy, and english.

Cassell said that "when rules are violated, there must be consequences" Hmmm..It's pretty hard to not violate rules which are made-up as you go along or rules which are devised to suit one's own viewpoint. Where is the real that activism can only be conducted at certain times of the school year? I guess activism events can't be conducted when social events occur; instead, they have be scheduled in compliance with the school calendar. That sounds like a Communist or a Marxist school!

Hey, Pontiac Academy for Excellence Middle School in Pontiac, Michigan is treating Brooke Harris like she bombed the school instead of just encouraging a fundraiser for an excellent cause. What the f*ck is wrong with Superintendent Jacqueline Cassell and why is she allowing this overreaction? Why fire that teacher for promoting a most worthy causes? Someone needs to bring this to national attention!

Without getting into the details of the case over who was right or wrong. If other Fund Raisers were allowed to raise money with a "dress down day" at the school why is this any different? Is the cause they wanted to fund raise for the problem? It sure seems that way.

Some Fresno Unified Teachers need to be fired for be activists. In fresno the teachers and the prinicpal organized student walkouts over imigration issues in washington. This is NOT what taxpayer are pay for in education liberal ideology and activism. I have seen both conservative teachers and students abused by teachers and adinistration. I personally as a student in Fresno Unified Schools was verbally attacted numerious times by teachers and administrators about my political beliefs. I was called names and was attacked by students and staff looked the other way. I am a fully credentialed teacher for the State of California. when doing my student teaching my students out proformed my master teacher by an average of one full letter grade. I have proven that I am a good teacher. But when I have children I will NEVER send them to public school that allows activism on liberal causes. That teacher should have been fired for once it looks like a school did the right thing.

Sounds like a really stupid idea for a teacher to even think about getting involved in an ongoing investigation.
"Harris asked her students to write an editorial about Martin’s death." This was Wrong! Kids have enough going on in their lives learning english, math, sciences, computer classes, business classses and beyond. Wasting time on some current blip in the news, only sidetracks them from remaining competitive with other students and other countries. Stay focused kids! Become the next bright engineer, doctor or business executive, that we and your future families will need you to be!

Maybe she should not have tried to start a fundraiser, however the punishment does not fit the crime. This is why having a teachers' union is so important. Administration would have never gotten away with this type of behavior if charter schools were allowed to have unions. So sickening!

This not racism. Why does everything that occurs between two different racists (did I mention that Zimmerman is hispanic and people keep saying he is completely white?) have to be racist? The teacher should have known better than to take a situation as explosive as the Trayvon Martin incident and try to incorporate it into the school atmosphere. The fundraiser would have been a great idea, she should have just initiated it after school hours, perhaps with the kids wearing their hoodies in front of a wal-mart or something. It would have raised awareness and more money. Before someone jumps on it – yes I am a mother of two who is NOT racist. I just do not agree with the way racism is being played out in this case.

This is a sad story! Whether or not one agrees or disagrees with the uproar surrounding Trayvon Martin's death and the subsequent protests and activity is not of significance here, but obviously the school administrators felt differently. Teachers should be engaging their students, applying real-life situations to their education and encouraging them to take a stand for what they believe in, and this is exactly what this teacher was doing. For the administrators to claim that organizing and carrying out this event would have "distracted students from their studies" is ludicrous and makes me think that the true reason behind this teacher being fired is; the fact that one of their staff was taking a stand, and helping students to do the same, on such a high-profile current event left administrators at unease. I am also a teacher and have seen numerous schools hold numerous events just like these to raise money for other organizations or causes; for example the numerous schools that allowed students to wear hats to school to raise money for the victims of hurricane Katrina. As a teacher, it greatly disturbs me that another teacher can be fired for encouraging her students to take a stand and act on something they believe in.

There's lots of activism in school – it's encouraged — anything from Amnesty International to D.A.R.E. to environmental issues and health issues. If the school had a problem with it, why didn't they just tell the teacher and kids to desist in the project? Firing seems more than overboard, it seems like trying to find a reason to get rid of someone you don't like. What happened to warning slips? There PTA should get involved. Sounds like the kids responded to this teacher and that's not always easy to find.

Let justice reign, not thinking someone is something because they are a certain ethnic group.

Again all of you Trayvon lemmings are jumping the gun. None of you have any idea what was said behind closed doors. The teacher said it herself that her defense was construed as insubordination. That to me, if you're smart enough to read between the lines, means that she was not fired for supporting the student protest but most likely how she defended her actions to her superiors. Defending yourself does not give you the right to disrespect your employers. As for you people who are singing that all too familiar "racism" song, where in this article does it say that her superiors or the people who fired her are white? If the people who fired her are black is it still racism? You people should try waiting for ALL of the facts to come in before picking a side. Those of you who fail to do so ARE the real racists.

Just like there is more to the Martin/Zimmerman case, I am sure there is more to this one. Only half the story is even briefly mentioned here. For legal reasons the school cannot comment and if the the teacher had any kind of lawyer she would not be commenting either. You really have to screw up to be immediately terminated as a teacher.Unfortunately the media will stop covering it once the facts come out.

I think it shows kids that it is okay to stand up for themselves/or in this case other people who have been wronged. I don't think it would have been a "distraction" if anything I think this would have been a learning tool on expressing your rights as an American. She was teaching them to be good citizens and humanitarians – and sometimes teaching history means history in the making. They didn't say what subject she taught, but I'm assuming current events or world events or social studies/sociology. They really didn't get into if the 'support Trayvon' movement was to call attention to a tragedy overall or part of the lynch-mob mentality against Zimmerman. Maybe that was the problem – maybe administration thought she should be teaching neutrally and looking at all sides. Who knows, but regardless of what kind of activism or in what way it was portrayed, suspension should've been the harshest punishment.

My guess is that she KNEW ahead of time that she was not allowed to perpetuate potentially unsafe agendas in this inner city charter school. This school was established with specific intentions against all things that distract from learning – making the assumption that these children have enough to deal with outside the walls of that school. I think the lawyer-types have done enough to exacerbate this situation. Her job is to teach. Her employers job is to ensure that the teachers do their job. She likely agreed in a contract to be a teacher and not an activist during school time. That's tax payer dollars she was using to push an agenda rather than to teach. As a parent of 4 school-aged children, I applaud the administration for keeping the focus where it should be – ON TEACHING. Not EVERYTHING IS A RACIAL ISSUE. Not everything is a cause for litigation. What a wimpy, whiney thing to say, "Get a lawyer." Good grief! THAT is what is wrong with our Country – entitlement. I want, you should give. No rules apply to me. Sad, sad, sad.

I don't think she should be fired, but I defiantly think she needs to be suspended unless of course warned or in her handbook says what she would be doing would cause her to be fired. I have been taught and I hope all of us have is that a man is innocent until proven guilty. These hoodie causes are for the cause of young black man's early death.. If this young man was killed in an act of stupidity, than by God put Zimmerman away. It took me a long time to realize media, races will do anything to help their cause. The media puts up pictures of a 13 year old Trayvon Martin? Why so young? I think we all know why.. We to as people do the same thing whether it gets us attention or that raise we want or need. I believe what she should be doing is teaching these kids about what happened in a different way. What does wearing a hoodie do? How about writing letters and your editors? Your governor? I am for a lot of things, but dressing kids up as someone who MAY have been the wrong and struck Zimmerman? What does that tell our kids? Seriously, I agree she should be suspended, but not fired unless warned or went against something. She should be teaching something to the kids, not organizing something she doesn't know whether this kid was innocent or guilty.

butterpants33… ALL crazy, uneducated racist folks like you are what make America violent just like Zimmerman MURDERED Trayvon and the two White racists that just MURDERED three Black INNOCENT men. Zimmerman claimed Black youths had vandalized his gated community 8 times so he went CRAZY and saw every Black person as a criminal. The two White racists claim their dad was killed by a black man so they went CRAZY and decided that every Black man was guilty! Black people continue to suffer from racism but MAJORITY of them still maintain their sanity and you have no shame claiming that RACISTS like you don't exist because you do.

You're the one's over reacting and not reading the FACTS presented here. How does racism even play a part in this? It doesn't. And I highly doubt it was racism that caused this murder. Sounds more like 2 scared people that didn't know what the other persons intentions were and the confrontation got out of control. Now is the guy lying about being beaten to get out of a murder wrap because he was quick on the trigger? I think if they can show a video or pictures of some real injuries occurring, blood on the sidewalk or grass etc that would at least make some of us feel better about why he hasn't been charged.

The problem or issue with this is that the Martin/Zimmerman CRAP has created unrest and a sense of violence, and angry, heinous arguments online. If supporters of anything Black, as the SPLC deputy said "encourage teachers to challenge their students" about the world, cant see the hate and unrest sprung from the case and they cant understand that the Hoodies WOULD create Distraction to themselves AND everyone else, then its ambarassing to see who is in charge of these institutions like SPLC!

  97. Dhaneen Comeau

As a fellow educator (and, unlike you, one who roots for the liberal causes), I'm just fascinated by your own writing style as it's filled with errors in syntax, verb tense, capitalization, appositive usage, subordinate clauses and so forth.

This is a sad situation. I can respect this teacher along with many others. If you can hold a fundraiser for other events why should we exclude the Trayvon Martin Case. What if it were their child or children. I see that Ms. Harris was doing something that many teachers and students should have done. Took a stand and showed how he or she cared about what happened to this child. I see that this Florida Stand your ground Law has made its impact across the nation. I am not a teacher, however, I feel that this is an issue that we shouldn't place out of site and out of mind because it didn't happen to our family member or friend. Remember the word say that we should be as one. In unity with each other. A lot of people view this case many different ways for what ever reason. Here the one thing that we all no. The only reason that Zimmerman pursued Trayvon was because of his race. People can say they feel because you are entitled to your personal opinion. I am so sorry for this teacher being terminated because she decided to get with some of her students and help the cause. Wow. Our economy is so wicked. The Lord is soon to judge all regardless of your skin color. To all of you unbelievers who say you believe in the Word of the bible please read closely so that you can see that in the beginning of time we all we decedents of Adam and Eve. So what I am trying to tell you is that we are all from the same two people regardless of our skin color. How ignorant it is to thank that you are so much different. He is a human being and he deserves respect. This signifies that there are a great problem in our country. Everyone need to truly get together and pray. Be careful of the stones that you throw. This situation could have easily happened to either one of use. We all should come together to help do what is right. I will keep all of you who thanks that this is not the issue in my prayers.

When I was in third grade, in 1969, my teacher was trying to teach us about racism, so she had those of us with brown eyes sit at the back of the class, and those with blue or green eyes sit at the front of the class. Some of the parents complained, and my teacher was reprimanded, but she wasn't fired. I learned so much from that experience, and I am really glad that my teacher wasn't fired.

I think it's a real shame that Ms. Harris was fired, and whomever made that decision should be ashamed of themselves. Regardless of your opinion on the Trayvon Martin shooting, it shouild important to teach kids to stand up for what they believe in.

  145. Ernesto Moreno

butterpants33 MOSTLY. There are Racists/Bigots from all races. But Blacks do display more of it, at least in co-existing environments. Their refusal to see it creates more unseen hatred and spite, much like Muslims who Know their religion is wrong but insist they are Gods people. The more Blacks are not honest and responsible with how they think–they are in denial many times, the more likely we will never reach a more balanced, lawful world.

Neighborhood watch people needs a change. Make a law to carry tazor-guns and pepper-spray instead of guns. Even 90% of officers use tazor-guns and have been for a while. Change the laws and we don't have to worry about deaths in Neighborhood Watch areas from Neighborhood Watch Patroler's, except for the drive-bys, robberies and all other crimes being committed in Neighborhood Watch areas that happens every day in many areas. Yes East Side, West Side, South Side, and North Side of many cities have at least one murder per day. Grow up!

  153. Heather Helms Kalka

Melanie Martin Kostelac you didn't say "good for them, school is no place for activism" you said "she is clearly biased, there hasn't even been a trial". That says that you are condemning her for a bias you think she has. The kids want to raise money for HIS FAMILY, you know maybe for funeral expenses and the like. Nowhere did it say they were going to hold a rally, take it to the hill or anything else of that nature to support the Martin's case. School is the exact place that children should be able to learn about anything going on in society and should be a SAFE place for everyone to express their views and opinions without fear of repercussions. Don't you think firing her was a bit extreme? They could have just said no, it's not appropriate.

  154. Clorian Scott

why hide what is going on in the world when one day it might just come knocking at one of their doors. That the problem if it had been a black killing a while charges would of been filed reguardless of the self defense claim so wake up and be honest RACISM is still alive and going strong.

But, it was the school year, and a time for Trayvon to die? I don't get it. So…racist killings should be saved for spring and summer breaks ONLY…when we are all FREE to protest? I'm confused as to when the RIGHT time to protest would be?

Being fired is a harsh punishment for a teacher trying to help her students with a fundraiser.

  191. Lora Thomas

I have no idea why the teacher was fired. Shouldn't she have been suspended? It seems that the school was judge and jury. I'm sure there is more to this story then what is written, but since we only have what is written, I feel the school should not have fired her. They already have had other fund raisers. Why could this not be accepted? Something is very wrong here.

I agree there is trash in EVERY race I don't care what culture or nationality you are. That's the bottom line. The sooner people realize this the sooner they will get off their soap box and come back to reality and start thinking things through without race or the color of your skin affecting their judgement.

  193. Dana Wurst Spinler

Why exactly are they raising money for the family? Is it for funeral expenses for young Mr Martin or does his family have other needs we are not aware of? I do not see how supporting victims of hurricanes equates with money for his family. As a teacher, you should recognize there are numerous ways to engage her students on this subject. However, most public schools stay away from anything controversial and political. That is why you celebrate Winter instead of Christmas and it is one of the reason I homeschool my children. If it greatly disturbs you, you might consider working for a private institution that allows you to be political.

first of all – she is not a journalism teacher, she is an english teacher (an 8th grade english teacher)… that means her assigning an editorial about trayvon was not part of her lesson plans. Next, she couldn't be too surprised if she had gone to the principal first and let them know of her plans. Just because something is a good cause, does not mean it is a good idea. The school can be liable for any actions she takes as a representative of the school, and she clearly did not get authorization for doing this. She is an advisor to the year-book staff… not even close to journalism. She over stepped her bounds, and jumped on a race bandwagon to cover her tracks… sad indeed

We are not getting the whole story. Unless hoodies are a violation of a school dress code (which isn't mentioned in the article), how does one justify distraction based on fashion choice.

the Dispatcher told Zimmermann to let it alone but did he no, he took it upon his on to go against the word of someone in-charge and look at the end result a death happened.

  225. Amani Jo

First of all EVERY case should be judged on its own merit because NO two cases are exactly the same. Second, the reason right-thinking people believe Trayvon's MURDER was racially motivated was because Zimmerman himself said, "these a**holes ALWAYS get away!" When asked who the a**holes were, Zimmerman and his neighbor's response was that Black kids had vandalized their community so… common sense tells me and others that Trayvon died because he LOOKED LIKE the alleged vandals. He also used the racial slur "coons" in referring to Trayvon. That makes it racially-motivated. As an example, according to criminal profilers serial killers are usually White males, how would any of you like it if your son was murdered because some fool thought he fit the profile of a serial killer?? think about that before you think it was okay for Zimmerman to MURDER Trayvon.

"Schools should encourage teachers to challenge their students to think critically about the world around them, rather than condemn them. What sort of message does it send to young children when their teacher is fired for helping them understand the world around them?”.

I agree, besides the fact that she's a teacher it's irrelavant that she can teach a subject. To say she should be teaching is ignorant. Course after course in education we are taught to give our children freedom of speech and action without wrong doing. Here there were no rules broken and this awesome teacher would do what any teacher would do with a true passion. Children remember him as wearing a hoodie is that a crime, no! It's society that give a depiction of a gangster. I as a teacher wear a hoodie because that's what normal people do when their cold.Someone needs to analyze themselves a little bit more and correct their administrative skills, possibly get back in todays college education courses.

Ola Balogun sympathy regarding what? Her poor choice in judgement? fund raiser or not if you have half a brain you may want to not walk through a political mine field regarding this unfortunate event. Not to mention why take a gamble and put your career on the line? Which she most certainly did. I'm not saying what she did was wrong. I'm just pointing out that she should of known that she was going to be walking through a mine field regarding this event she put on and that she should of weighed the circumstances and pros / cons etc. Basically she should of thought this through before putting her career on the line.

  229. Dana Wurst Spinler

Why exactly are they raising money for the family? Is it for funeral expenses for young Mr Martin or does his family have other needs we are not aware of? As a teacher, there are numerous ways to engage students on this subject. However, most public schools stay away from anything controversial and political. That is why public schools celebrate Winter instead of Christmas and it is one of the reason I homeschool my children. In reading the story, it would appear that she did do something else. The story states the students had "asked" to do the fundraiser but were not approved. There appears to be something more here.

butterpants33 well, the way white people cry & don't want to face the monsters many of them were to people and still are today. if people treated them the way they treat/treated Indians, Blacks, Hispanics, etc. we'd see the biggest pitty party ever. no, sweetie, the racists are the whites.

  231. Nic Grant-Mah Leung

STOP BASHING ON @JILL MARIE: SHE AND GARY ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! This woman needs an attorney. PERIOD…. and should have her JOB BACK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. White Americans REALLY NEED to wake up and start having a conversation with your kids about RACE and how to treat PEOPLE EQUALLY in America…because It's NOT HAPPENING! Race relations in this country ARE SUPER POOR, AND UNLESS Caucasians and others that don't recognize what's really happening here….make this a teachable moment; THEN WE ARE GOING TO KEEP MAKING THE SAME MISTAKES OF THE PAST!

  232. Maryam Khosravipour

James Lemonjello , Please think about it. If i wanted to be racist i would have called him a cracker or hitler or somthing. white trash is really not racist, it is more like a culture of the way people live

Because this is a Legal Case inwhich all the facts are not in and the "Fund-raising" may be condoning a person who attacked a Community Watch man. In adition, THIS particular "Fund-raising" may, and likely WILL, create unrest and therefore lack of focus and attentiveness in the classroom. They are young people, the students, and if so many adults get bent out of shape on this case, then the Highschool has every reason to do what THEY think fit. Altho Suspension sounds a bit more like the path they should have taken.

School is a place to learn how to real world works.. and Yes.. if they wanted to wear hoodies for one day in support.. why not.? they were trying to raise money for Trayvons family.. Would you have a problem if they were raising money for any other person that was killed??? Schools and people raise money ALL THE TIME for victims of tragedy.. if it happened to your daughter and the school wanted to raise money for YOU you wouldn't have a problem

  235. Jennifer McGee Sheremetta

until you know the whole story (and Im pretty sure none of us do) keep your accusations to yourself. You're not helping anything or anyone. You dont know what happened that day…I dont, no one does. On the other hand..how about his family making $$$ off trademarking ‘I am Trayvon,’ ‘Justice for Trayvon’. One is just as wrong as the other.

  236. Victor Robertazza

o no kids with hoods up distract learning? aren't they learning how fucked up the law really is by doing so? guess its back to learning 2+2 instead of real life situations.. bullshit

  237. Mary Robb

Can we wait for a trial before everyone starts calling everyone names? Isn' everyone entitled to due process? I would suspect that this teacher was the catalyst that activated these students to wear hoodies. This has nothing to do with color, it has to do with how this teacher was teaching and how she was implementing her own curriculum.

  240. Bob Banks

I'd like to see proof that anyone involved with this besides the media has made this about race. It does seem that it could be that but that's abit questionable. That being said, I do think excessive force was used and that Zimmerman should be held accountable. He did disobey the police when they told him not to follow so that's 1 thing that's wrong. Oh and about the marks on the back of his head.. If someone were holding you down wouldn't you try to claw at any vulnerable point to try and get them off of you? I know I sure as hell would.

  241. Amani Jo

butterpants33, slavery was not abolished until 1865 in the United States. When you think about it that is only about 150 years! That's only about 3 generations since black people have been in slavery, whom by the way were given nothing and had nothing when they were freed. Furthermore, these people were segregated and treated unequally until about 1 generation ago. I feel you would have a lot to cry about too if this happened to your people. Have some compassion please.

  245. Gail Marie

What she was doing was a good idea, but not during school hours.

  246. Sherard Hillmon

THE CASE IS SIMPLE. ZIMMERMAN CANNOT BE PROTECTED BY THE LAW BECAUSE HE DELIBERATELY DISOBEYED IT. DO NOT PURSUE MEANS JUST THAT. ANYWAY, A NEIGHBORHOOD "WATCH": CAPTAIN WOULD KNOW THAT…HINT.

  247. Anonymous

Basically that is true. Go walk through Detroit about 3am to prove my point. If you want to talk about who is racist: BET channel, black history month, black music month, Black Power Magazine, Black Panthers, Black Entrepreneur Magazine, minority quota laws, I assure you the list goes on. If one is proud of being white, one is also racist.

  248. Susan Reese-Capozzoli

There were two things problematic here. 1) This is a role for parents and not for a teacher. The parents of these kids should have helped them with their grief and organize an event or way to collect money. 2) Adding the hoodies to the event was where the teacher crossed the line from trying to facilitate support for the family and moving into political activism. This just wasn't appropriate. I think suspension was more approporiate – so I'm wondering if this was not a first offense.

  249. Rick LaChapelle

So, people can raise money for the thugs family, but he can't raise money for his own defense? Is that how it works? Only when a BLACK, not an african american, is killed by somebody of another color? Remember, Zimmerman is Mexican! (unless he or anybody else was born in africa & is now an american citizen they can NOT say they are afican american, they are AMERICAN, just like me.) You people need to stop making this a black/white issue!

  250. Roger Bradley

I'm 60 yrs old, white and I wear a hoodie. I'm a thug? Who knew! And Maryann your first comment did come across as racist. I don't think you meant it that way but it does seem to equate ignorance and trash with whites. I do share your disdain for ignorance though.

  251. Jennifer McGee Sheremetta

Nic Grant-Mah Leung that woman was wrong for doing that on school property! she is not paid to raise money and practice activism on tax payers time. She needed to be concentrating on teaching our children what shes paid to teach them. Let her do her good deed on her own time and then if any students want to help out she can get permission from their parents for them to help her OUTSIDE of school.

  256. Karen Castellano

You're just showing your own ignorance.

Karen Castellano Why does the family need people to raise money for them? Didn't Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson do that while they were there rallying folks before all the facts are known in the case? Hmmm….so Al and Jesse were just there to make money for themselves?

Melanie Martin Kostelac WOULD IT BE ACTIVISM MELANIE IF THE GIRL IN YOUR PHOTO WAS SHOT…AND SOMEONE WANTED TO RAISE MONEY FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. THAT'S NOT ACTIVISM…IT'S CALLED BEING HUMAN BEINGS….AND UNTIL PEOPLE UNDERSTAND WHAT'S AT WORK HERE….ESPECIALLY IN THIS MATTER AND ULTIMATELY THIS CASE….THIS COUNTRY WILL NEVER BE ANY BETTER FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS!

Racism exists in all shapes and forms. Take this blog for example, where a minority of the white posters are racist and a portion of those yelling the racism card are reverse-racists themselves, tossing racist remarks like no tomorrow.

And to suggest that anyone saying we don't quite have all the facts yet is a white racist…that's the very example of hypocrisy.

I'm a minority myself, and although I believe that racism is wrong, reverse racism is equally wrong, if not worse. If you're a reverse racist, you're not just a racist, but a hypocrite.

  302. Steve Bivens

She needs to worry about teaching, not flaming the fire of political activism – she got what she deserved.

  303. Craig Love

Why do so many people blindly jump in to protect & side with their own race,..even before they really know whether they're guilty of a crime, or not?

They show their stupidty by doing this, & set a bad example in the long run to others that will later do the same.

When does it become racism according to people like you? By his own admission, Zimmerman became suspicious because of his RACE due to his allegation that other Black kids had vandalized his gated community in the past. He also made the racial slur "coons" in reference to Trayvon. If the MURDER of Trayvon was not due to racial profiling, what is?? Just pray that no fool ever looks at your kids one day and see them as a pedophile because he looks like Warren Jeff or even as a serial killer because he looks like Mason. trayvon's case should resonate with EVERY parent regardless of their race because like it or not, he died because he was Black and if he was White he would be alive today! Anyone who denies that needs to go deep inside themselves and re-examine their hearts if they have one. And BTW… Zimmerman is half White and half Peruvian and in fact the name Zimmerman is NOT Hispanic.

  320. Natalie Tolman Medeiros

All you folks are missing the point and screaming racism.. The facts here are that the students wanted to raise money for the family. They enlisted the assistance of a teacher to help them to raise the money. Those kids aren't being racist, the are being civic minded children that wish to help out a family that went through a horrific loss. What the sam h3ll is wrong with that? Our children learn more that reading, writing, and arithmatic at school. They are supposed to learn how to be responsible young adults. They wanted to do a good thing…Hell, Zimmerman is out there asking for donations, why can't the family receive a little assistance, too? A good teacher helps children learn about life, too. At least they were asking for a peaceful way to earn money. I would be very proud of my son or daughter if they wanted to help raise funds for an innocent family that lost their child. Those people, the famiy of Trayvon, did nothing wrong. Even if their son DID do something wrong, and we don't know all the facts on that yet, the family did nothing. They were sitting at home watching television, and a family member was killed. They were NOT involved in the incident with Zimmerman. The teach should be reinstated.

  321. Stephen Wilson

Maryam Khosravipour in our society, unfortunately, people are identified by the way they dress. The fact that, in the past few years, a disproportionate amount of criminals have worn hoodies has legitimized that statement. I occasionally wear a hoodie and I am not a thug, but I do understand the perception.

  322. Lisa P Rakic

Rick LaChapelle, actually Zimmerman is German on his father's side, hence the last name, and Peruvian on his mother's side.

Something is wrong. My school does such fundraiser's all the time. Granted, the money has always gone towards the PTO or Relay for Life (not a private individual). Seems to me and based on this article there must be more to the story. This case directly effects the school as T.M. was a student there. The students wanted to do something public to show their support and many schools do fund raisers for students of tragic circumstances (fire in the home) and teachers chair that committee. Why would the Admin. FIRE her for just assisting the students with a proposal when they could have simply vetoed it?

  324. Freida Lagrone

@Jennifer McGee Sheremetta Did you read the post?? Obviously not, so I’ll copy and paste a section for you to understand why she needs a lawyer. (Boston.com reports that the idea for the hoodie fundraiser came from the students after Harris asked her students to write an editorial about Martin’s death. The students wanted to ask the school’s administrators if they could pay $1 each to wear a hoodie to school. The Pontiac Academy for Excellence has a dress code but often holds fundraisers where students are allowed to “dress down” in order to raise money for a cause.) If this is something that the school has done before then why can’t it be done for Trayvon??? Kind of weird if you ask me…I agree she should GET A LAWYER!!!!!!!!!!

This teacher should NOT be asking her students to write an editorial of Trayvon's death in the first place. What if the student did NOT agree with HER OPINION on this matter…I can imagine what the grade on this paper would be.School is not a place to teach activism on an OPEN case like this. If she wants to do this then maybe she should talk about ALL the other racial unfounded attacks…black kids attacking whites and getting a way with it.Don't seem like we hear much about these!

  409. Tim Hendrickson

I agree, Kayla, that teachers should be using current events as a means of engaging students and encouraging them to think critically. What I don't see here, though, is whether this teacher was doing that. A fundraiser for the family doesn't sound like the most appropriate vehicle for engaging such a difficult issue–or encouraging students to come to conclusions only after collecting all of the information–but who am I to tell someone how to teach? The real issue here is whether the teacher was using class time only to raise money or whether it was part of a larger plan/set of activities that served an educational purpose. It it was the former, then she should be disciplined, for she is there to teach, not organize. If it was the latter, then nothing should have happened. Unfortunately, this article does not go into enough detail in that regard.

  410. Naya Garner

Amani Jo …that and all of the other attacks on black ppl that have been happening as a result of this case…i don't understand how no one else sees this…

  411. Sefam Aspinall

Jennifer McGee Sheremetta – what does Melanie's comment have to with a fundraiser? A fundraiser does not proclaim innocent or guilty but is used to raise awareness and funds for a cause. Even if there was a trial a fundraiser does no damage.

  412. Freida Lagrone

Doug Cribaro What David Israel was saying is that the teacher can teach and do other things like be an "activist", which promotes creative thinking…geesh.

  413. Jack Urie

Doug Cribaro No, she's a liberal elitist snob. They are wonderful, intelligent people. They get it, they know more than the rest of us, and they stick up for the little guy well before all of the facts are in. Other liberals are innocent, and conservatives are automatically bad people. Don't you just love them?

  414. Leonard Nichols

I do not care if she was black, white, green, or Blue if she did it by the book then she was fired with out cause. Those over her should be dwelt with about this matter even if it was the school board.

  415. Stephen Wilson

The "Stand your ground law" is not applicable in this case and doesn't have anything to do with anything.

  416. Jack Urie

Denise LaForge is absolutely right. Zimmerman was a yahoo cop wannabe strutting around in the guise of neighborhood watch. He shot this kid because he (Zimmerman) was stupid, NOT because Trayvon was black. But, because it was "white" against "black", the race hustlers of the world show up and scream. Nobody wins, except their bankers.

The students asked her if they could do it. Obviously, the teacher in question is actually teaching being that the students want to get involved and why not? It shows that her students are learning right from wrong and i can only assume that she being the teacher, is why these students want to get involved. I wish I had more teachers like this when I was in school. White, Black, Asian, Latino, we all need to stop calling racism as soon as someone from another race does something to ours. Flash the Racism card when there is proof of a hate crime. Gotta stop condemning an entire race for the actions of a fraction of a race.

Amani Jo – Trayvon is not dead because he was black. I am not saying that what Zimmerman did was necessarily the right thing to do.. What I am saying is that this incident was an unfortunate turn of events that led to the death of a young boy. Zimmerman did in fact become suspicious because of his race. This does not make him inhuman. The fact is that most crime is committed by young black adults. Zimmerman was not necessarily profiling; he could have been going off of what the statistics are and what he has experienced in the past of his community. The 911 call that you are referencing when you say he called Trayvon a "coon" – is being analyzed by the FBI and it still has not been proven that he did in fact say what everyone is assuming he said or it sounds like he said. Both Trayvon and Zimmerman made mistakes that night. Had Trayvon never attempted to fight Zimmerman (which he did because several adult witnesses corroborated that Trayvon had bounced Zimmermans head off of the concrete several times) then Zimmerman probably would have not turned to deadly force. It was bad circumstances for BOTH. By comparing this case to the future of my children looking like "Manson" or "Warren Jeff" you are using the slippery slope argument. Taking one thing and pushing it to the absolute extreme. Was the death of Trayvon Martin appropriate for the circumstances – No. Did he die because he was and ONLY because he was black – NO! There was more to it. At some point people have to look at ALL the facts and not half. By the way.. Zimmerman classifies himself on the official police report as being a "white hispanic"

I am Black and while Martin was black and Zimmerman Is White (Hispanic), I don't think this case is all about race. While I do think Zimmerman racially profiled Martin, I don't think it was rooted in racism. I think he targeted Martin based on previous crimes committed by other unrelated black men in the neighborhood. So it wasn't because he hates black people, rather it was that he has a bias toward black men based on previous crimes.

This case is about a self-appointed Neighborhood watch "captain" who is a obsessed with crime and a wannabe vigilante policeman who overstepped his bounds. He has been allowed to terrorize the public and with a firearm no less and this time he went too far and killed someone who did nothing. He had no business bothering Martin AT ALL. He called the police that was all he needed to do.

Based on the biases, self-formulated stereotypes, and whatever else going on in HIS mind, Zimmerman determined that Martin was guilty of a crime yet saw him do NOTHING. Zimmerman then decided that Martin was guilty of this invisible, non-existent, phantom crime and he was going to "get him" His mind was made up as soon as he saw him. Then he stalked him, accosted him. tried to illegally detain him, tried to interrogate him without ANY legal authority and when Martin struck back in self-defense.

He got the best of Zimmerman. Zimmerman then murdered him because he couldn't subdue him physically. It's not self-defense when YOU are the aggressor. Just b/c he was scratched up doesn't mean he was NOT the aggressor. The undertaker already said Martin didn't have any bruises or scratches so if he did all Zimmerman alleged, there should be a mark somewhere, since he claimed it was a life or death struggle.

The biggest problem is when teachers interject there own feelings into any subject without giving both sides of the story (in this case both are not known, nor will they be until the all facts are revealed) this is jumping to conclusions, unfortunate situations happen every day and do not make national news or enrage so many people on two different sides, in my opinion this would have been just another "page two" if N.B.C. staff had not parsed and edited recordings and statements to sway public sentiment. Once again all of the facts are not known regardless of race, reason, or situation. This is the job of the justice system not the media the greatest victim here is the public!

NO action needs to be taken regarding fundraisers or ANY activism until we actually know through the law what exactly happened. How would the parents in that school feel if after doing such a fundraiser it was proven that Mr. Zimmerman only acted in self-defense? Teachers need to lead the thought that "we will all wait on such actions until all the facts are revealed." Not jump on what we think (based on the biased and bored media).

I love it the answer to everything, 'Get a lawyer'. I think she should have stuck with teaching and not getting involved in a situation that she does not have all the facts about. Hoodies at school, sounds like trouble to me. What screwdrivers next.

Stephen Wilson i DID. The point is he started. That is grounds for termination of the stand your ground law, which is the precipice of the reasoning for letting him walk. like i said, an ACTUAL NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH CAPTAIN WOULD HAVE KNOWN NOT TO FOLLOW IN THE FIRST PLACE. Even if it is true that he got his ass whipped for being nosey, he is still in the wrong because Trayvon has a parent living in the gated community. Zim should have known THAT as well. My opinion is not a biased one. YOU GET THE FACTS.

From my understanding, her students asked to raise money and they wanted to wear hoodies to demonstrate that support. So what are you talking about…good for the school district? The school district did not need to fire her, and I am sure she will get her job back. This is not about Zimmerman people…this is about students that want to do something for this family. Stop making this about the case because it obviously isn't. Showing sympathy where it belongs is not about taking sides. When someone has loss a chid you give and show respect. If this was that adorable little child you have in your profile picture that was shot in a drive by or loss their life for nothing, you would want the same respect. Or does it take you losing a child for you to understand the emotions behind what these students wanted to do.

Sherard Hillmon – Not to mention that a 911 operator is not the authority of the law. There are no legal implications for doing, or not doing, what a 911 operator tells you to do! Why does everyone keep on going back to that point.

I think the clue is in her statement, "When I tried to defend myself, it was construed as insubordination.”.
What and how she said what she did may have contributed to her firing. You can't get an attitude with an employer and think you can get away with it.

If the school district–like most school districts–and the school have a DISTINCT dress code, the teacher could have justifiably been fired for violation of school policy. In other words, a) she was working in an at-will state, and; b) by not informing her principal, she was sacked, and/or; c) she did inform her principal about the fund raising, the principal told her NO, and she decided to go on about it anyway. IF she was a 'marginal' teacher, and was going to be let go (teachers that are fired before the end of the contract year have to be notified by a certain date per union contract) anyway, the firing is going to have to be taken to another level and possibly court action.

  536. Author Michael A. Lewis

    Jennifer McGee Sheremetta

How is it wrong for them to generate profit from the slogans? You don’t know what the family’s financial situation is. You don’t know if they had life insurance on Martin or not. If not then that is a debt that they must pay. Also they have a lawyer and therefore legal fees, which are not cheap. I don’t think it wrong at all to try to capitalize on these slogans in order to fight for justice for their dead son, murdered at the hands of a vigilante wannabe cop who stalked, accosted, and harassed him, then murdered him when he couldn’t detain or subdue him physically.

  537. Dusty Bates

I would suggest that we are inaccurately using the word (racism). I’m familiar with how it is defined. However, racism should be considered to be the combination of racial prejudice and racial power. For those who are in the minority cannot truly affect the lifestyle and well-being of those who are in the majority. Historically speaking, I cannot recall any ethnic group in power ever having anything stripped away from them as a result of “racism”. Yes, we’ve come a long way. The bitter fruits of slavery, the Native American displacement amid U.S. expansion, the Holocaust, and other devastations have long since passed through as bowels in time. But, don’t get upset with me if I still have a bad taste in my mouth.

  538. Arnold Ripkin

Of course there's more to it. She had already asked the kids to write… an editorial? Any teacher or principal who steals one minute of the taxpayers money meant for education to teach activism should be fired. If some schools choose to teach activism instead of academic studies, then let us as parents have the choice to opt-out of YOUR activism.

  539. Rachel Cooley-Porter

Maryam Khosravipour- So, if I watch Fox news, I'm consumed by the darkness? Wow. Before you start condemning people for their choice of news stations, you should learn how to correctly use the written English language. I am all for encouraging students to think critically. I also believe she should not have been fired without an expressed warning from school administration. BUT why only encourage students of color to think critically about a white man killing a black man when all the facts are still being determined? How about encouraging your students to critically think about the effects of rap music and deadbeat fathers killing your community too! Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson never talk about the real issues affecting their community because they do NOT want to wash their cultural "dirty laundry" in public. They do nothing for their community by choosing ignorance but hey they kinda look cool on television. what con-artists they are!

  543. Adriana Alvarez

  545. Levi Sam Taylor

Maryam Khosravipour , you keep commenting and trying to defend your racist comments. WHY? You are an ignorant racist who made that clear above in many posts. You really have no understanding on what is actually going on in the world or this case do you? And you use the BBC as a credible news source? I remember seeing a whole story on BBC about "The Bat Boy". Pretty sure that was in the national enquirer as well. All news stations and broadcasters will portray what their own boards say! Were you interested in anything going on in the world before Angelina Jolie adopted an African baby?

  546. Christina Asad

Naya Garner not everyone has common sense like us. People are so ignorant, it's sad.

  547. Jennifer Lasch Smith

I find this outrageous that she was fired for this. It is so ignorant for the people here to be saying she shouls worry about teaching the kids instead. If you actually read the article, you would notice it says her students were inspired to do the fundraiser after she gave them an assignment to write an editorial on the case.
Sounds to me like this teacher was on the ball, getting her students to do some critical thinking about a current event- and in turn her students were inspired to do something!

  548. Camille Mays

I don't know if Ms. Harris should have been fired, I don't know if Mr. Zimmerman is a racist, and I definitely don't know what happened that night with Mr. Trayvon, but I do know that there are a lot of hateful comments on here from both sides. We are all humans and can respectfully disagree with our fellow man. We don't own absolute truth, and to defend our positions as if we do is dangerous. Search the contents of your heart before submitting accusations and personal attacks. We can learn so much from each other when we share perspectives instead of intentionally insult when others don't share our views.

  549. Christina Asad

No matter what the story ends up being. The poor kid is DEAD. No coming back, no way of hearing his story, or what happened that day.

The fact remains putting color aside a man shot an unarmed boy and walks away without being arrested. I guess its ok to shoot someone UNARMED and say self defense.

  553. Hazel Crouch

This would have been a perfect moment for this teacher to actually teach her classes about how to prevent another tragedy like this, to observe and teach the children to understand the situation in a observational mentality. Get and give positive feedback. Discuss how people are reacting and how the hate and anger are spreading.

Instead, her class came up the the idea to march on the school wearing hoodies, and it would be okay because they will pay a $1.00 to do it… and that money would go to charity. Thankyou for encouraging mob rule. Would it be okay if they decided to shave their heads and tattoo nazi emblems on their scalp, and pay a $1.00 to do it… and that money would go to charity..

  554. Cassie Danielle Smith

Jennifer McGee Sheremetta It's called a comment section for a reason…you are stating your opinion on the matter. In fact, you have commented on several ppl's post, stop reading it if you don't like it. GO to Zimmerman's website!

I think you speak without knowing my children. Altogether, my children participate in the following activities Boys Scouts, fencing, taekwondo, Model United Nations, gymnastics, outreach to homeless and my third child is adopted from China. They are not lacking in social skills nor are they isolated. A public institutional school is the only place where kids are forced to be with people exactly their age, have every single moment of the day scheduled, eat only in the cafeteria and walk in lines everywhere. Maybe prison would be a close comparison. I do not wish my kids the reality of fending off bullies at recess daily and being offered drugs in middle school. I like that they can spend the day learning. I am not doing anything different than what most of our early presidents had which is one on one tutoring on a daily basis where I can instill a love of learning. I find it funny that you do Hospice at Home, isn't everything better with a loving family around you?

You always know when a black man is killed by another person of a different color because there are ALWAYS plenty of "witnesses" and "experts". Black man kills another black man, and nobody wants to snitch or step forward. I would say it's almost two faced and hypocritical but I do not want to be called a racist.

ibflyguy2-of course Zimmerman has a website asking for donations. He fled his home, job and prior life. What income does he have now??? If he turns himself in, to the New Black Panthers, can he claim the $10,000 reward? I don't want my tax dollars paying any public school teacher to teach my children their beliefs and views. Obviously, that's a parents job…

  560. Sharon Foster

Karen Castellano Melanie is not biased nor ignorant. This teacher made a poor choice. She could have done the fundraiser outside of school, kind of the way that sports teams do carwashes, and potentially raised a lot more cash for the cause that she felt so strongly about. The truth is that there is just no place for issues like this in school. It would cause too much controversy. I mean look at all the controversy it is causing right now and this is just an article! There is nothing wrong with fundraiser to support the family of Trayvon Martin, just as there would be nothing wrong with a fundraiser to help Zimmerman with his legal costs, but these kinds of things should happen outside of school.

Here is a typical example of why our school systems are so bad. This woman should be fired for ignorance and never allowed to teach again. Teachers are supposed to be teaching and supporting all colors of students. To become and activist in a class room is not what taxpayers want their money to be spent on. I don't care what kind of activism it is. What in the world has happened to common sense in this world. If you want to be an activist do it outside of your class room on your own free time. Hats off to the school administrators who fired her. Here is a suggestion to all of you teachers out there, teach your classes so our students can learn the subject at hand. Who wants a bunch of "hoodie" students disrupting a class room.

Did anybody actually think that the students should also be reprimanded for having a mind of their own? If the teacher can be fired then the students should be suspended in the minds of the administrators. Its all bs.How can they fire her for something that hadn't happened yet? When you organize something like this you run it through the administrators first and they say yes or no, not you are fired.WAKE UP! Something else happened obviously.I am inclined to agree it was racist in content.

this is how we support our teachers for seeing the good in supporting our students in a show of civic protest in an attempt to show it's support during this tragic time in our society's history. this dirtrict should be ashamed.

What so much violence in the African-American community, every day should be "hoodie" day. Hell, black people need to rally/riot every day not just when "white folks" do something "wrong". Where is the African-American leadership to address deadbeat fathers and single mothers? Black folks could really be helped by the large number of entertainers and professional ballplayers among their ranks. But rich black folks are just as "dirty and shady" as the "evil rich white folks". They both only care about themselves.

Mr. Zimmerman could have saved himself a lot of grief by using just a little common ole mule jackass sense. Mr, Zimmerman had no earthly reason to act like he had some authority, as a trained Policeman. Mr. Zimmerman has, as the old folks use to say. " He made his bed hard, so now he has to lay in it." Now I hope the rest of us use just a little common, ole mule, jackass sense.

  566. Arnold Ripkin

The hoodies is the point! Blatant attempt by the teacher stir up racial tension. I don't think anyone would oppose her sending money to Trayvon's family.

  567. Kami Maia Greenlee

Is it not true….many people expect teachers to take the responsiblity of grooming their kids for life…Its hypocritical to say that….if that was true, more people would teach their children about sexual education and not expect the school 2

Its shocking to see all of the negative and hateful comments on here. What is also shocking is how little of this article people actually comprehended, if they actually read it.
It was not a "protest". It was fundraiser- in case you don't know, it costs alot of money to bury a family member. How do you know the money was not for that? Its also a shame to hear people throwing around the word "thug" about a kid you don't even know. No, that kid was not perfect- he definitely did some bad things, but who among us haven't? Some of the things Trayvon did were things my own brother had done as a kid. Lucky for him, he survived into adulthood and is now a happy, law abiding father of 3 with a loving wife. We will never know now if Trayvon could have done that too.

Everyone is clearly entitled to there opinions. Everyone here has made great points. Sometimes we have to take our anger for issues out of the way, to use a better judgment. We have to learn to pick and choose our battles. I don't agree with her being fired but I do believe that she should have been made aware that this may not be appropriate for her position at this time. I would have been this Teacher in my younger days but now I know there are other ways to have a voice without risking the lost of my job or self respect. People be still, and be silent and wait for Justice to prevail. It may not happen for Trayvon, but one day it will happen for another Trayvon. Martin Luther King fought for us to be equal, all races. Obama is now President. My message is, There is hope, lets just let the Higher Power handle the evilness of the world and sit back and wait because A CHANGE IS COMING! Lets not respond to the ignorant remarks of others, ignore them, they will go away. I am not saying don't take a stand for what you believe in, I am just saying THE BATTLE IS NOT OURS, ITS THE LORDS! I hope this message has not offended anyone's race or religion. Go home and hugs your babies, spend time with your families and love ones. Make sure our children are aware of what could happen to them. They could walk in the store and accidentally bump into someone and their life can be taking, or they can go to school and some nut comes in and start shooting. Life is not guaranteed to any of us. So be close to who you have everyday you can. God Bless!

This teacher was supporting students who were trying to do a good thing by raising money for a family that is in pain and in need of financial help. They need to look at whether or not she followed the rules for fundraisers. I think the real issue is the school does not want to bring any more attention to itself or Sanford over the issue of Zimmerman murfering Trayvon. Howeve if other the teacher followed the rules, she should not have been fired. I guess Sanford, FL is looking for another headline to make the news and now they have it.

really??? ..dont think so..look at the Casey Anthony case..that went on for what?? couple of years?? missing persons cases..where a young beautiful white woman/ has disappeared/ran away/been killed whatever..ppl talk about it..FOR A LONG TIME..movies are made..books are written..the fact that ppl think this case should just be rushed through and forgotten is just wrong..hispanics are just as misrepresented in the media as blacks..read between the lines

Superintendent Jacqueline Cassell This is the lady that fired Brooke Harris (cassellj@pontiacacademy.org) I think everyone should email her and tell her what a huge mistake she has made by firing that amazing teacher/ACTIVIST.

  574. Christina Asad

Naya Garner exactly, it's because of people like us who know this is wrong is the reason why it's such a big deal. And i will continue to support everyone who will fight for Justice for Trayvon. I don't want to even imagine if this was switched around. Trayvon would've been in jail guilty of murder. With NO bail. Ha! I hate the society we live in now. Disgusting.

  575. Dusty Bates

#1 – you have basically admitted that a crime has taken place in Florida. #2 – In your example, those who committed that particular crime have been arrested. Therefore, since the guilty have been brought to justice, there would be no reason to protest. Those are two very different scenarios. But, thanks for your input.

Greg Rockenbaugh oh plz…no one asked ANYONE to bend over backwards..all anyone asks for is respect and to be left the hell alone..if you don't like me because of whatever then leave me alone..why do i have to be harrassed while minding my own business..

I am a 60 year old white woman & I wear hoodies with the hood up all the time…I have never thought that people were so silly as to think that a fashion statement/choice could truly indicate their personal disposition…Hoodies became increasingly popular after the Grunge Musical Explotion and I have not witnessed a decline in their popularity since…I live in a White Jewish University setting and Hoodies are worn by anyone and everyone…What's the deal with this "Thug Thing"…people living in rural and all-white "The Burbs"…must be very fearful and suspicious folks…afraid of the dark and more…Paranoid Individuals.

I think I can take both sides here. First of all, what were the kids raising funds for? The Martin family lost their son, and that's a tragedy, especially since there might not be any accounting for it. But what do they need extra money for? On the other side is that this teacher was fired without any warning? No one said to her "You might not want to do this, you could get into trouble"? It seems like the administrator wanted to make a statement of her own and situations like this is exactly what a union is for. By the way, the whole "she should be a teacher, not an activist" disregards the notion that she can be both.

Wow, from that single statement you have cleverly deduced that she had an attitude. Most would think that it is possible to defend oneself without displaying a temper. But you…you have to be commended for your ability to see past the obvious and fill in the blanks. Excellent job!

If I were walking in my Parent's neighborhood and a stranger approached me with a weapon strapped to his waist..and he told me to freeze..I would protect myself from that individual. This young kid didn't know that Zimmerman was a "so.
called captain of a neighborhood watch. Black, White green or yellow…you can blame Trayvon for protecting himself.
Just because this young kid may have been getting the best of Zimmerman does not give Zimmerman the right to plead self defense..If anyone was defending themselves it was Trayvon..and those are the facts… I am a peaceful individual..But is anyone came up to me in plain clothes with a gun strapped to them asking what I was doing there..
I would feel threatened. looking at many of these comments is sad..it is a tell tale sign of where we are as a society.
racist thoughts and comments are wrong regardless of who they come from. It is very disheartening as a parent to two little girls. So much hatred…. Sad indeed.

You had to throw the Casey Anthony case into this? Really? Is this your business? Can your life not go on because of this? Are you so hurt about this that you can not move on??? Book are written, movies are made for black people as well as white……. oh, Casey Anthony was not so beautiful.

  610. Sylvia Sieh

btw…this had NOTHING to do with George Zimmerman. the fundraiser was to raise for Trayvon martin's fam. whether george z. is guilty or not, they still couldve raised money for a family who lost their son, is greiving and wants justice. supporting the fundraiser didn't have to mean u think George Z. was guilty, it just means u have sympathy for Trayvon Martin's family…(.does anyone see my point?)

  611. Bellwether Nesingwary

No one is going to know for sure what really happened, ever. Then, the matter is being tried in the media by these schmucks who think they have a clue about what's going on. Someone needs to get a handle on this case and prevent every potential juror from this media exposure. I think it's too premature to make up your mind either way so stop having such opinions and wait and see.

  612. Larry Millner

She is suppose to be teaching…She should get fired for not doing her job.

  613. Naya Garner

Adriana Alvarez it affects me b/c this case is setting off a chain reaction..if ppl weren't going around shooting and killing random ppl before this..they certainly are doing it now..if u haven't experienced racially motivated violence than what else can u really say but "mind your business" and ECSPECIALLY since i live mere MINUTES away from where this incident took..u better believe this shyt is MY BUSINESS

Part of teaching is being active and supportive to the community. I think this is a sad day for educators. Many schools have dress down days that support many charities. This should have been no different.

I agree! I teach and I would never be an activist like this. There is a teacher where I work and she only spoke about Obama in her Social Studies class and wouldn't allow the kids to talk about any other candidates during the 2008 race.
Plus, all the facts have still not come out about this case. We do not know what really happened although the media will tell you who did it.

Gees, the more details that come out about this, I mean the TRUTH, the more ridiculous Martin supporters look. I was even thinking Zimmerman should be charged with something. Not anymore. Turns out, Zimmerman didn't follow Martin as everyone has been led to believe. Martin ambushed him. There are eye witnesses to this. All the incredible lies. Like the "experts" who say it was Martin's voice on the 911 tape afterall. That is completely false. It's just lies that are purposely put out there to be spread by the media. Also, that terrible place in the recording that is too muffled to make out clearly. It has been determined that Zimmerman did not say "coons". He said "jerks". He has no history of racism at all, and in fact, has volunteered in the past to help homeless people, and one homeless man in particular who was black. People think it matters not that Martin was caught vandalizing school property and that an empty bag containing pot residue was found in his backback when searched, ALONG with women's jewelry and a flat edged screw driver… There is also reason to believe Martin threatened to assault a bus driver at one time. He was pissed that Zimmerman was monitoring him. He attacked Zimmerman, breaking Zimmerman's noze and banging his head on the sidewalk. Zimmerman yelled for help for 40 seconds but no one came, people right there who could have helped. Forty seconds is a long time when you're getting your head beaten in.

The Southern Poverty Law Center will only support student activism if it matches the Law Center's prejudices. It would oppose any "critical thinking" that favored George Zimmerman and denounce it as "hate speech." My prejudices often match the Law Center's, but they are prejudices all the same.

well you see….its a private school, not a public school, private schools don't give a damn unless it benefits the school directly…

  629. Troy Alexander

I am confused as to how this issue occured at all. It seems that any type of fundraiser conducted at any school would be subject to approval by an administrator. That is how it is where I work… any group wanting to raise money must first obtain approval from the administrator responsible for overseeing sports/clubs, etc. This eliminates any questions/problems before they occur, and ensures that any one group, class, etc. does not "hog" fundraising activities.

So, I think it is problem with this school's proceedures–or an individual not following those that might be in place. Not sure, cause we don't know the whole story.

  630. William Pearson

the hatred, intolerance and ignorance in our society is unreal! we need to stop fighting with and criticizing one another, including in these posts. when are we going to just co-exist peacefully? absurd!

  631. Jan Brown-Hansen

puhleeeze! The teacher should not have been fired. If there needed to be consequences it could have been a few days suspension or recriminations and threats from the administration. Typical public school hard line overreaction.

  632. Anonymous

This is horrible. We teachers are supposed to encourage civic engagement in a non-violent way, and we are supposed to motivate our students to "think outside the box." Brooke Harris gave them a great assignment to write an editorial, and the kids were inspired to do a wear-a-hoodie-to-school day to show their support for Trayvon Martin, a murdered child who was just a few years older than them. Apparently, she did her job– she taught them to engage and be passionate about something! The kids in Pontiac need teachers like Ms. Harris! What a shame. :(

I'm reading comments about race and what not and people crying racism. I haven't read all the comments. But I haven't seen anybody crying racism. This is plain wrong. PERIOD. These children are almost grown, they should have a right to rally for whatever they want. Teachers sponsor things like that all the time. The problem was probably the controversial issue Trayvonne's death brings up. The person who fired her was probably thinking about that. However it was still wrong to fire her. It is the same difference as the high school student who got EXPELLED for having long hair. It's not right and it's controlling.

  634. Faye Preswick

The school district should not fire for teaching students to be active and have a voice in a cause they believe in. I think this lady should get a lawyer because she could have been asked to stop the activist 'wear a hoodie' day for Trayvon and that would have been sufficient; to be fired is ridiculous. I am sure the young students wanted to participate in what they considered helpful to another teenager who had been mistreated or killed. Get real, the school district superintendent and other counsel is just plain wrong for firing the teacher over activism. Grow up school district, be active and participate in the causes that are relevant at the moment in this country's history. The 'stand your ground' law needs revisions.

I cannot believe an upper level administrator from a public school in this country, did the RIGHT thing… Amazing! Again, everyone has opinions, but let the Special Investigator in this case gather all the evidence. Teachers are supposed to TEACH. What if one of her students took the side of Zimmerman, & was bullied by the other students. What kind of mess would that have created? Think before you act, people!

  639. Collene Tippery

Having two daughters in high school, I have frequently through out their years in school sent money in to buy this t-shirt or that pin for my girls to wear in support of various fundraisers ranging from breast cancer, epilesy, food banks to even for a fellow student that did have cancer. These events all have been done by the teachers in their schools. I, personally, think that the teacher did not act in a harmful way towards the students. I do not find this to be political activism either. I think that the teacher was trying to relate to the victim and his family. Since the media has made such a big deal about the hoodie that he was wearing, she chose that to help her students relate. Now if the school would have never had "dress down" days, then the school and their administrators would have a case to disicpline her. However, they have had "dress down" days for various fundraisers and therefore, have no reason for any disicplinary action towards this teacher. Firing her was extreme, suspension would have been more appropriate.

  640. Deblina Deb

To all the people that are commenting on here saying that she should've been teaching, how do you know that she wasn't? She was "helping students with a fundraiser". The article doesn't say that she spent class time on this issue. Besides the fundraiser itself would teach students to stand up for what they believe in! I'm proud of the students that took action and took it upon themselves to do what they believe is right and if I were still in school, I would've loved to join them.

  641. Don Kirk Green

I've read plenty of comments and heard plenty of things said about this and other issues. I am truly convinced that this board have the most unsympathetic group of people I have ever seen. this law will get a white person killed as well, lets see then if the things being said today will be said then. trust me its going to happen.

"Wear-a-hoodie-day?" For a Trayvon Martin fund raiser? Seriously? Gee, I wonder how much time out of her teaching did she spend on this fund raiser. And we wonder why our kids aren't learning.

  643. Anonymous

Wear-a-hoodie-to-school day. Isn't that like any other day?

  644. Susan Reese-Capozzoli

There is a big difference between using symbols associated with helping cure disease, fund food banks, etc. and making a political statement that says that this boy was shot because he was black and wearing a hoodie. That's what the hoodie represents and it promotes racial hatred and division. There has been no proof that this was the case and even if it is proven, it is not appropriate for a teacher or a school to fan these flames. As for teachers taking growing responsibity to teach life lessons – that is the PARENT's job. Just because they don't do it, it doesn't fall to the teachers. They should be role models and educators. I recently renewed my teaching certificate and I never learned that it was my job to do a parent's job.

  645. Will Del Valle

The best post in the whole thread. Reverse racism is socially acceptable to many, but it is only holding cultures back and is the reason real people (not the politically correct lemmings) will never take them seriously. Bill Cosby had it right and spoke out against it, and he was called an Uncle Tom for it.

  646. Diane Funk

and she should be. a teacher is a teacher, not a fund-raiser and certainly not for a cause outside of school(ing). want to contribute towards a good cause? then do something after school, on your block, after hours, etc. anything other than that smells of diaster and being as biased as we claim others to be. the whole episode is smelly and dangerous. if anything happened during school, the school becomes responsible. a child in school may have limited means ($$$) and might not be able to contribute but feels pressured. this is all wrong wrong wrong. I was a teacher (retired) for many many years and I might've gotten involved w/a sanctioned school event but I would never ever put myself or mytudents in a bad corner and this is really bad. anyway, the teacher was as wrong as wrong can be and deserves to have her butt canned.

  647. Stewart Davis

IT WAS A FUNDRAISER! NOTHING MORE NOTHING LESS! Community activism would of been more on the lines of sitting out of class or marching in front of the school or something…what is wrong with a school raising money for a family that was put in a bad financial situation?

All of this racism talk just ignorant. Everyone is forgetting that a young man lost his life. Whethe he is black, white, or from a different race. Every race has their issues and that is not going to change. I will just continue to pray for all no matter what race they are because reading these comments jus lets me know that the world is still in a very bad and ignorant place. GOD BLESS ALL!

  650. Diane Funk

also as a post note. as a teacher, you should know the limits and possible extensions that you are able to go. if not, then check w/your union rep and/or school board. I've pushed the envelope many times but in favor of my kids but I knew the line and if and where(when) to cross it and what would happen if I went too far. what seems right in your mind's eye often is not right can and will get you fired. I agree that now she needs a lawyer but if the union, and I presume there is one, hasn't come forward to defend it might be what she did is in deed defenseless. she pushed the proverbial envelope – now the envelope is pushing back and it's not a good feeling.

  651. Cypres Rhicin

    I came, I saw and I conquered:
Laws were used to protect slavery institution and are now used to protect murderers.
Stand on your human property has become stand on your ground.
Could she have been fired had she been collecting for Zimmer online fundraising?

  652. Anonymous

I don't think there is anything wrong with a teacher that knew Trayvon personally (or any teacher for that matter) helping the children in the community with a fundraiser for his family, however I do agree with the school superintendent that wearing hoodies to school would distract the kids from their studies. Due to the fact that this is a very high profile case and the hoodie has become such a symbol of this case, I think it would have absolutely been distracting. There is no reason they couldn't have come up with another way to raise money though and I think a teacher should realize this. I'm not sure if she should have been fired because I don't know the entire story but I understand why that particular fund raiser was not allowed.

  653. Rebecca Meador

It really makes me sad seeing all the racist remarks and comments being made. I have thought that we were all past this. Why does it have to be black vs white or white vs. black. To end racism is to not feed into it or even start to use the race cards. I'm really ashamed and disapointed in many people on this site.

  654. Carla Briggs

My daughter has to wear a hoodie in the daytime, because even through a tinted window the sun hurts her skin.

  655. Anonymous

"Schools should encourage teachers to challenge their students to think critically about the world around them".
It makes me wonder why the teacher didn't encourage the students to get all the facts before making a decision. It seems to me that would be the BEST lesson that could be learned from this media disaster.

  656. Hotep Yan Kenyatta

Around Sept 11 we were allowed to raise funds. But when it comes to Blacks/African-Americans, they are considered 4th class citizens in the race guided imperial system. Slavery never ended, it just morphed into a more corporate polished machine, that also includes the average white person, just on a higher level.

  657. Rozemarijn Van Der Steen

She did not organize it. She simply allowed the students to do it (in a manner that seems to be done often in that school). I see nothing wrong with that. It was not INSTEAD of teaching math, science etc. I do not believe the hoodies (or any other dress-down thing they did for fundraising in the past) would detract from the curriculum anymore than anything else once the students finish their conversations and sit down in class.

  658. Jennifer C Call

I'm 66 and wouldn't be seen dead in a hoodie. (Or tennis shoes)

Cmon people, you know the drill. Criticize a black you're a racist. We are going to spend the rest of the year on this nonsense. Its never going to stop. If it wasnt Trayvon it would be something else. It will always be something else, always! Blacks say theyve been brutalized for 400 years. The USA has been in business since 1789 when our Constitution was ratified. So that's 223 years. Who did the brutalizing for the other 177 years? Maybe starting with their own tribal leaders who sold them to the Arab/Muslim slave traders who marched them across the desert to West Africa. Even Malcom X realized in the end after be duped by Elijah Mohammed that the only was we could solve the racial problems in the world was for all of us to work together. Jesse, Al and Louis do want this because racial strife is a business to them. Educate your children, build family unity and stop whining. We are not going forward we are going backward. Too many black men and women have sacrificed too much.

Martin was suspended for among other things…destruction of school property. A 10 day suspension means that he had been in trouble before. This teacher was looking for personal attention more than seriously trying to work with the school to send the proper message to her students. If SHE can't follow the rules…why would the school want to model THAT.

  693. Nancy Smith

The city of Pontiac is bankrupt and trying to sell the city hall! No police, fire or anything. How about raise money for the ailing school system? That is the worse school system in America! It's rated worse crack crime city in America too!

  694. Jennifer C Call

"that wasn't disrupting nothing" Jeeez you'd better stay in school. When you read that back doesn't it strike you that it is wrong? That is a double negative..that wasn't disrupting anything, not nothing. I suggest you start studying hard and learn correct English. You don't know what rules she broke.

  695. Curtis Weiss

It wasn't Fla old buddy, and why are they having fund raisers for tayvon Martin when his family's lawyers are doing the work pro bono. Is it so tayvons mom can pay for the patent lawyers who are copyrighting his name? And why is a teacher involving herself in an issue that has been unresolved by the courts, and so far is only based on speculation? Just a thought.

  696. Sandra Hutton

I see no injustice being done when a Teacher wants to support her students in any kind of fund raiser. Would she have been fired if it had been another student that had been killed. Or if Travon Martin's case wasn't so in the News right now. I do believe that she wouldn't have. Her supporting her students in this does not mean that she is biased in anyway. Everyone that is sitting there making this a racial thing really need to shut up. There are so many different views on what really happened that night. Me personally I believe that Mr. Zimmerman should be in Jail, that he should be going to trial for murder, what happens after that is another thing all together. But he should not be walking free right now. These students that were wanting to raise money were his classmates and having a fund raiser for him could very well been a way to help them heal. I am not a racist but I disagree with a lot of things that people from my own race are saying.

  697. Nandi A. Crawford

Jennifer C Call She mentioned in the article that she went by the rules. By chance, do you? also, was the march itself were to be held during school hours? reason I asked because last week, a local high school did something similar and I almost went.and your right Ms Call, I should have said anything.

Hey brainchild. Ever hear of Affirmative Action??? As a nation, liberal social activists have made it an issue. How bout the black caucus?? Blacks are the biggest racists in the country. Obama has repeatedly used the race card. Quite frankly, there is a faction of blacks that perceive racism in everything. That is where most of the country's race problems come from.

  701. Carlton Cayward

I stand corrected… I thought the whole incident took place in Florida. Anyhow, the way i see it.. a civilian shot a kid without the authority to do so. Additionally, I hardly think helping students with a fundraiser is a fireable offfense.. (perhaps thats not the real reason). By the way, if the neighborhood watch captain (wannabe cop) had mindedhis own damn business, that kid would be alive and the watch captain wouldn't be about to go to jail for a long time. I'm totally miffed why this guy thought he had the authority to follow a "suspiciou" person and equally disturbed by the rush to this guys defense… One fact is for sure… He was not a law officer!

  711. Greg Oropeza

What a great lesson to teach the kids! This was their story relevant to their times, this is their reality and the teacher merely helped and got fired. It was not her idea, nor was she saying Zimmerman was guilty.
I hope the students stage a walk out so the district loses money for every day they are not there.

  712. Ravenda Dallah

no wonder racism can't go anywhere. As long as there is the internet, racists, especially the undercover ones, can continue to voice their evil rants and keep feeding the virus that is unstoppable. Whatever happened to warning notices and behavior discussion in these schools. Do they just kick a kid out if they fail all their subjects? They couldn't tell her this is not what they want her to do and tell her not to do it again? Just leave the kids hanging to get a substitute who knows nothing about their needs.

  713. Ed Scheidde Rogers Tonsing

Good for them…She is paid to teach not to rouse the rabble…

  714. Joy Ellen Hoffmeyer

Ok…so lets look at the facts instead of the colors. There had been many break-ins within this community, neighbor watch was watching someone who did not live in the neighborhood….so Mr Zimmerman did what we all hope our neighbors do, keep an eye on things. He was walking away as the dispatcher told him to do and we struck in the back of the head and fired and killed the person attacking him….why wasn't she raising money for Mr Zimmerman? Oh that's right because that would not be the popular route. Everyone really needs to look at the police reports, instaed of watching the news so much!

  715. Beverly Durant

  719. Christine Genthe

What a farce! Schools and teachers and staff are constantly organizing bake sales, fundraisers, car washes, this day, that day etc. Doubt if this was taking up too much extra time over any other activities or teaching. Most of these plans are made after classes anyway, and it doesn't take much time. So because of a little fundraiser that school is losing a good teacher. Also participation would be voluntary anyway.

She's a racist and should be fired as she is stirring racial hate. She did not try to teach her students to see both sides of a story and not to rush to judgement, She is a terrible teacher.

Zimmerman "is no racist, Uhrig said (his lawyer) and all the evidence that Uhrig knows about corroborates Zimmerman's account that he acted in self-defense after Trayvon Martin knocked him down and began pounding Zimmerman's head on a sidewalk.

If there was a crime, Uhrig said, Trayvon committed it.

"The first person who swung, from what we can tell, was Trayvon," Uhrig said. "The crime was battery by Trayvon Martin against George Zimmerman."

A mortician didn't find any injuries on Trayvon's body, Uhrig said, because he was the one throwing the punches — not the one taking them."

Wow, guess she didn't want her black students to know the truth.

  728. Chuck Taylor

Do some due diligence and you will find that the superintendent that fired her was also black. Do your due diligence and you will realize that this was not a racially motivated act. Race should not even be part of the narrative! The facts that have come out show that there was some culpability on the part of Trayvon(I'm not letting Zimmerman off the hook because. Like you, I don't have all the facts). His death is still tragic regardless! But hundreds…maybe thousands of innocent people are slain in this country by guiltless murderers. Where is the outcry and support for them? This unfortunate incident has been sensationalized by the media and capitalized by opportunists.

  730. Ken Heathman

Why would this teacher want to support the CRIMINAL instead of the victim? If you people would get your news from a reliable source (instead of the lame stream press) you would find out that Martin attacked Zimmerman, so Zimmerman had to defend himself. There is a kid witness and an adult witness that verifies Zimmerman's story. I suggest people listen to Sean Hanity's radio or TV show to hear the sound bites of the witnesses.

  731. Stephen Wilson

Sheila Ames Le Roy I agree! On top of that she missed the part where this event happened at a Charter School that is not unionized, yet she has been referencing union involvement throughout her posts.

She was trying to teach the most important lesson of all. Stand for something, or fall for anything. I am a teacher myself, and teachers like her are the ones that the students remember. When you see a movie about a great teacher,(Dead Poets Society, Lean on Me, that one with Jennifer Garner) they all inspire their students to live beyond the curriculum.. The problem with todays society is that no one wants to speak what's right. We get in our comfortable lives with our cliques and life becomes junior high school all over again. I applaud this teacher for doing something GREAT! Racist people out there take this advice- Do better. You need more people!

This whole issue is getting way out of hand. Why would the Martin family need a fundraiser anyway? Martin is not going to be tried for murder… by the laws of the state, he was defending himself… there is proof that the initial reporting of the 911 call was tampered with by certain news agencies so Zimmerman would appear to be a racist… Honestly, even a civil suit would be hard to win against Zimmerman. The truth of the matter is a lot of people have jumped the gun with their opinion about this case and tagged Zimmerman a racist before all the facts were found. THAT IS THE REAL PROBLEM HERE! One other point of interest… Zimmerman is called a white Hispanic by certain news agencies… WHAT THE F–K IS THAT SHIIITT? HE IS EITHER WHITE OR HISPANIC! Good God, that is like calling Obama a white Black man! You see how crazy this whole thing has become!

  735. Sabrina Nicole Giles

I can believe all of these mean and cruel comments this isn't about what color you are this was about a teacher helping some of her students out and who`s to say she wasnt teaching because this case has been a "teachable moment" I don't think any of this should have constituted to them firing her!

  736. Ebony Noni

It disturbs me that so many white people out there don't understand why blacks are so outraged about this story. Its like they are in some type of denial.. Of course blacks are going to be pissed when a black guy is killed by white law enforcement.. Its been happening for hundreds of years! Even if zimmerman is innocent, It would be hard to convince the millions of blacks in this country. We all took history classes. We all learned about the brutalities inflicted upon blacks by whites. None of us were slaves but surely we can recall rodney king, abna luima, amadou diallo, sean bell, and countless others! It happens all the damn time and the police get a slap on the hand when they have just murdered someone. A lot of whites are very defensive right now because they feel threatened. Whites (not all) have had a tendency to feel threatened by blacks throughout history. This is why young black males are murdered before they can even reproduce. Check the symbolism. SMH to all the whites in denial.

  737. Allen Helmer

I Fu*kin hate black people after at this bullsh*t. Never met a black…or should I say African America, in my life until I joined and served honorable for two deployments to Iraq in the army. Watching everything that has happened with this case has made me sick. I officially have drawn the conclusion that blacks…negros…niggers…are the most racist in this country. I used to think that there was a difference between a Black and a Nigger, not anymore.

  738. Elinor S. Leal

Harris & Rest of the Admin. Ought to be ashamed of themselves.. Maybe THEY wanted to be in the limelight? How Pathetic.. all of this… so sad in so many ways & facets… God Bless all our Children..

  739. Frederick Galade

First a violation of your Constitutional right for freedom of speech to encourage a stand on what you believe. I would suggest a local congregation of Monks to go to the school with their Hoods up and see what happens. Teaching involves making students use their own minds and opinions and if they fail if the students follow the NORM and that is do what I say or suffer the consequence. Wrong for her dismissal and take it to Federal Court.

  740. Cynthia Mullinks

this is not some tv show this is real life people on both sides if the family needed money to bury him that's fine but by what right do the need or should accept anything more.

When does it become a race issue for this teacher getting fired? She isn't white so therefore, she must be black because according to today's society if you aren't black you're white. GEORGE ZIMMERMAN IS white-HISPANIC! But, the new black panther party wants to declare a day where they boycott everything white? It is logical to be a equal rights activist and want racism abolished, however, you declare a war on another race? fucking idiots! clump yourself into a stereotype and bitch and scream when someone calls you a thug because you have it around your neck in 24k gold and tattooed across your chest. Slavery ended. Your people sold you to our people. tough break.

Wow… A LOT of racially motivated speech here…
The issue should be that we have no idea what really happened, why a 17 year old boy is dead, why a neighborhood watch "Captain" was patrolling armed, whether or not there was a struggle… These are the questions that we need to answer before screaming at each other that this was some sort of modern lynching, or that T. Martin was a hoodlum looking for trouble.
A 17 year old boy is dead. I don't care if he's black, green, blue… he's dead. And when I think about my son, and that this could have happened to him…
An adult who was trying to improve his community is Public Enemy #1. I'm a community Watch Volunteer, and I carry a big flashlight. If I Louisville Sluggered it into a 17 year-old, I could kill him… So this could have happened to me…
And now we're firing teachers that encourage their students to follow school precedent to make their voices heard on a subject that is important to them… She didn't suggest civil disobedience, or that they disobey the rules. She said, "This is the accepted way of protesting here at our school, so if you want your voices heard, do it this way."
And for that act of… insubordination? She was fired?
What is wrong with US, that we allow these tragedies to compound like this?

  746. Sarah Harrison

How stupid… you have all these rights in America… I wont touch that topic but anyways… and a murdered students teacher cannot offer her (and her students) support in the family's time of bereavement? This is ridiculous. I am sure she can work elsewhere anyhow.

  748. Meagan Davis

Regardless of the whodidits and the whatreallyhappeneds in this case, whoever fired this teacher should also be fired. Call it activism or whatever else you may like, this teacher was teaching those kids a lesson far more important than whatever subject she was "qualified" in. She was teaching them to stand up for something, to fight for what they believed in, to stand together, and yet now that lesson has been undermined by people who apparently don't know how to do that themselves.

  749. Jim Pruett

Racist teacher trying to teach racism. This guys mom wants a peice of the hoodie money too, she copyrighted his name and slogans. might as well put the rights for his move on Ebay so they can start the bidding and this lady was raising money for them?

For those of you that keep saying 911 dispatchers aren't the police, you are dead wrong. They actually work in close proximity with each other! The training that they go through requires them to ride 8hr to partial shifts in squad cars. They have to learn police language, as well as police behavior, so that they can relay more accurate information. They also have to learn different neighborhoods in order to give accurate directions. Some departments require that their 911 dispatchers attend the police academy!

  751. Michael Putnam

Nearly every school across America holds the same type of fund raisers, my 8yo son has hat day nearly every month but to be able to wear a hat he has to bring a dollar to school! All the time teachers waiste to print out little fliers and cut them to size, and the paper and ink they use, my goodness someone needs to do something about it I tell you! We need to get real here, this teacher was obviously showing support to her students who wanted to show the family that they were in there thoughts! Funny how so many people think this is horrible on the teachers part, wasn't Zimmerman able to set up his own websites for donation? I don't know all the facts on what happened, but this is getting crazy and needs to be remedied fast!

  752. John Lewandowski

She deserved to be fired………..She should have concentrated on teaching how to read & write instead of declaring herself the judge on a case which has not even come to trial……

  753. Nicole Yvonne Stroman

Why is everyone calling this young man a thug? Because he wore a hoodie. Do any of you know him personally? No I think not. So I guess people who go jogging with hoodies on are thugs too.

  754. Marc Lucas

@ Craig, 17 or 18 what right did he have to shoot him. Reports were, Zimmermam had no broken nose or head injuries. So why was the shooting justified.

Has anyone heard of Bob and Nancy Strait? They were married for 65 years. On March 14, 2012, in the early hours of the morning, Nancy was raped and beaten to death by a 20 year old African American named Tyrone Woodfork. Nancy was a nearly blind 85 year old white woman. Her husband Bob served in World War II in the 101st Airborne. He was just released from the hospital where he was treated for a broken jaw and ribs. He was also shot in the face with a BB gun. Nancy was buried on March 23. This didn't even make the US media. It did in the UK. No hoodie marches for them. No racism here. Where is the activism for an 85 year old white woman intentionally raped and savagely beaten to death by an African American? Was this mistaken identity? Was this a shooting that occurred after an altercation? No. This was deliberate. Where is the justice for the white victims here?

  756. Richard Smith

And would all of you supporting this teacher raising money for the Martin family support another teacher raising money for a Zimmerman defense fund in school? Don't all you black racists start squawking at once, now…

My son Jesus was stopped by the local police today in his car and the first thing the policeman told him was "don't you know you look suspicious with that hoodie on". My son was brave enough to speak up concerning his fourth amendment rights which caught the officer by surprise. That is what the students needed, leadership in a time of shock and sorrow. Remember they are supposed to be living in an enlightened time, yet they are facing Jim Crow type rascist in the "land of the free". The Travon Martin case has shattered the American Dream for them. The teacher needs to sue. Is that murderer in jail yet?

  761. Clayton Burley

this is typical of school boards as they in the more affluent schools. they claim to be christian and republican. well they aren't the kind of christians and republicans I grew up with. they are predjudiced and mean. they are no robin hoods either.

  763. Samuel Fondren

I'm glad she was fired. Teachers should teach. Students get enough Militant Radical Training at home and at the Mosque, not to mention Black Panther Party bounties for the death of a man who did not break any law.

These children need more than one parent. With such disciplines, they would not have the time away from studying to attempt to beat a neighborhood security patrol nearly to death.

  764. KeeKee Shepard

Wow…yeah I can imagine me attacking someone so violently that they had to discharge a firearm on me all while CRYING "HELP" AND BEGGING FOR MY LIFE in the background of a 911 tape…now that was a brilliant performance by this 17 year old kid …i'm sorry "thug" as you guys are calling him. Because carrying skittles and ice tea makes you a thug these days…..about to go get my "thug" on right now as a matter of fact. SMH…

  765. KeeKee Shepard

"A 10 day suspension means that he had been in trouble before" and you know this how exactly!?!? "The sky turns neon green every time you close your eyes" you see how stupid it sounds when one just pull statements out of their ass with no merit?

  766. Todd Hodges

What exactly are they raising money for? To rake Zimmerman over the coals more than he has been already? He's already been tried and fried in the media, do Trayvon's parents really need more money to keep altering evidence when they've already trademarked their son's name for those funds?

  767. Cara Leigh Snider

Are you all or most of you really that stupid, Zimmerman has a webpage wanting people to send him money for living expences, and for his trial, he is the one trying to prosper from this. He killed a kid with skittles and an ice tea in his hand. Zimmerman needs to spend the rest of his life in jail. This teacher is just trying to help this family who's son was gun downed and killed for no reason.

  768. Marc Lucas

@Jeremiah i agree. All the facts do need to be put out. First of all Zimmermam was just the neighborhood watch…. Not neighborhood cop. His job was to watch and call the police. Im not even bringing up the race thing…. If it were black on black, white on white no one should loose their life especially at the hands of a neighborhood watch
    wanna be cop….

  771. Corey Nufer

All of you need to cut it with the racist crap, nobody did anything racist in this situation, the fact is that you do these kind of things outside of work or with the permission of your bosses. She should have been warned rather than fired, but this is NOT an issue of race. All of you that are continuing this argument that this whole thing is over race are being completely ignorant, this was about one mentally incompetent person making the worst possible decision. It is also about a police department that is incompetent, not acting in the interests of the victim. Every single one of you that are making this a race issue need to take a step back and stop trying to spread hatred, most of you claim to be christians, exactly which of the teachings of Jesus tell you to spread hate?

  772. Kimberly Kenya Kimbrough

It sounds as if the Principal received pressure from the school board. And that is why she fired the teacher.
More people should check out HOMESCHOOLING. The schools do not want free thinkers; they tend to raise SHEEP.

  773. Larry L Abernathy

everyone has their opinion. whether good or bad. instead of having all of these arguments, let the law decide. all of this" my race is better than yours" or "the US enslaved my race, they owe us" childish bickering is unnecessary.

  774. Kisha Lindo

It wasn't a man that got killed it was a boy. Everyone seems to be forgetting that a grown ass man shot an killed a 17 yr old teenage boy that law in Florida should not be considered when it's a minor who gotten killed this shit is really pissing me of that Trayvon a child in my eyes got his life shortened because an asshole was so fucking paranoid!

  775. Nicole Yvonne Stroman

I keep reading comments from those who supports Zimmerman's claim of self defense stating did those who do not support Zimmerman "listen" to the 911 call. My question is did you listen not only to the 911 made by Zimmerman, but to the 911 that was made by the lady whose house all of this had taken place in front of. Zimmerman claims he was frightened and shot in self-defense really???? How many times on that 911 tape recording made from the woman did you HEAR TRAYVON NOT ZIMMERMAN SCREAM FOR HELP BEFORE HE WAS SHOT IN THE CHEST. WHICH EXPERTS HAD ANALYZED THAT IT WAS TRAYVON'S VOICE NOT THE "FEARFUL FOR HIS LIFE ZIMMERMAN". I guess he was.really tired (and I will quote his words from his 911 call) "These assholes always get away" and decided not to let him. Even though his major crime was walking down the street with a hoodie a pack of skittles, ice tea and a cell phone.

  776. Nicole Yvonne Stroman

People on here want to condemn this teacher and say community activism is inappropriate in schools. Well if this is so, then apply it to all forms of community activism not just to students wanting to raise money for Trayvon's family. This is inappropriate right? But its not inappropriate when money was being raised in schools by students for victims of hurricane Katrina (acceptable community activism). It's not in inappropriate when students collect can goods or winter coats to donate to homeless shelters (acceptible community activism). It's not inappropriate when school children collect toys or raise money for the less fortunate on the Christmas and thanksgiving holidays ( appropriate community activism). Raise money for a deceased child's family ( unacceptable community activism). Why is that? Is it because of the manner in which he died? Because if it were a child who died because of an illness then it wouldn't be inappropriate now would it? You all say community activism shouldn't be practiced in schools correct? Well them don't just apply that rule to the areas where you are least comfortable. Apply it to all areas of community activism THEN…. POOF BE GONE YOU PEOPLE ARE ALL HYPOCRITES….

  777. Victoria Jones

At my sons high school intorance ca hats are against dress code, but they $1.00 to were hats to raise funds for cancer ect. On a regular basis its no more distracting then anyother school event that takes away from class work. I agree SHE should Lawyer up, if teaching is what she loves & she wants her job back, WOW she gets fired, but the teacher who abuses our kids have rights. What a world we live in…… All I
    can say PRAY…..TRUST..BELIEVE…

  778. Anonymous

The forms of cohesive activism that you are comparing with are usually conducted after school hours. Donations are collected and dropped of on the way to class or after class. Activism or politics has no place in a classroom setting, the syllabus does. This tragedy is already causing division amongst Americans and our children should not be distracted by it while in school.

  779. Randon Garcia

K to try an open some eyes that don't really understand what racism is.. Is there anything racist about me shooting a white kid in a hoody with his pants a lil sagged cuz it made me uncomfortable. Even if I start chasing him an he begs me to stop an I call the cops an they say stop too. then I fight him get beat up But I shoot him anyways. Then when all the people show up to investigate are all black an don't prosecute me because they know my dads a judge.. wait there's more. Then when a nice white teacher feels bad for that kids family an wants to support them she gets fired. If you think none of that is racist I just really hope you don't own guns. Cuz you might get away with murder. But know this I'm a black Mexican. An according to the media biracial people can't commit hate crimes

This is so sad I think her intentions were to help her students As to all u who support a young man being followed and gunned down while screaming out for help he was not a thug he was a nice young man who did not deserve to be treated like that But hopfully she the teacher will land on her feet its so sad

  782. Ed Scheidde Rogers Tonsing

She had them write an editorial….. Would the kids that held the "racist and unpopular" opinion have still been graded for ability instead of the content?

  783. Ed Scheidde Rogers Tonsing

I would gamble she would have given lower grades to the papers that didn't fit in with her own opinions….

  784. Nicole Leonard Rhea

this teacher did no wrong–her students felt an injustice and she supported them and made them feel like they could make a difference in this world- which is the greatest thing a teacher can do–the point is to educate students so that they are able to see outside of themselves–she rocks.

  785. Pastor-Jonathan Dale

The points brought by both sides have been very interesting. As a teacher I can tell you it is our job not only to teach the traditional subjects, but also to teach students to be socially aware as well. Before some of you comment and say I am wrong consider this: A teacher is expected to teach students to be tolerant of different ethnicities, different religious views, students with different sexual orientations, and a host of other social topics. This is a social issue that involved at the very least stereotyping that led to the death of a teenager. Failing to teach students not to stereotype and to have tolerance leads to bullying. That's point one.

    Point two:
According to reports corroborated by the teacher and administration similar events have been allowed to happened. Apparently "dress down" days to raise money for a cause was an acceptable practice at this school. The Administration is not permitted legally to say which cause students can and cannot bring to light as long as their actives do not cause disruption to the learning process. Which leads to point three.

    Point three:
The Supreme Court ruled in the landmark case Tinker v. Des Moines in 1969 that in order for school officials to justify censoring speech, they "must be able to show that [their] action was caused by something more than a mere desire to avoid the discomfort and unpleasantness that always accompany an unpopular viewpoint," allowing schools to forbid conduct that would "materially and substantially interfere with the requirements of appropriate discipline in the operation of the school."

Zimmerman's guilt or innocence is irrelevant in this case. The teacher and student's first amendment rights were violated.

Can't wait to see the replies on this one.

  786. Anthony Batiste

I hope she fu**ing bancrupts this miserable school district. She has a rock solid lawsuit. I'll be following this tragedy. Her supervisor must have been some Nazi sympathizer. Such scum should self terminate. #Justice4Trayvon.
