WWE Rumor: Brock Lesnar Vs. Randy Orton Set For ‘SummerSlam’?

This coming Sunday at WWE Payback, Randy Orton has a chance to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion when he takes on Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns in a fatal-four-way match, and, while Orton isn’t expected to walk out as the champion, there is a possibility that he will, as WWE could be looking to build towards Randy Orton vs. Brock Lesnar at this year’s SummerSlam.

There are issues with a potential Randy Orton vs. Brock Lesnar match. One of them is that both of them have recently turned babyface, and, after Lesnar’s post-WrestleMania RAW performance, WWE feels that Lesnar has the potential to be the biggest babyface the company has seen since “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

Orton on the other hand has been feuding with The Authority since February, and it wouldn’t make very much sense for him to rejoin the group, as an Orton heel turn would likely involve him doing so.

In the recent past, when WWE has an opportunity to make a dream match happen, they ignore the babyface vs. heel rule, and just do the match. Both of the John Cena vs. The Rock matches are a good example of that, and it’s likely that they’d do the same with Lesnar vs. Orton.

It may be hard to believe, but Lesnar has actually faced Orton before in the past. It was back in 2002 on an episode of SmackDown. Orton was a main-roster rookie, and Lesnar was — at the time — the youngest WWE Champion in history, which is a record that would be broken by Orton two years later. Lesnar squashed Orton, and moved onto bigger and better things. Orton continued working his way up the WWE ladder, and joined Triple H, Ric Flair and Batista shortly thereafter, creating the legendary faction Evolution.

Earlier this year, WWE put up a list of opponents that they felt should face Brock Lesnar, and Orton was one of them. At the time, Lesnar’s WWE future was in question, and many people in the company felt that he was going to leave WWE and return to the UFC. Of course, Lesnar elected to stay with WWE.

Many feel that the match that WWE is building to is Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam, however, it’s very possible that WWE will have Orton win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship this Sunday, and start building towards a Randy Orton vs. Brock Lesnar dream match, which would likely involve Lesnar defeating Orton, and regaining the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
