‘The Walking Dead’ Could Become A Movie, And Andrew Lincoln Is Excited

Season 6 of The Walking Dead doesn’t return for over five months, but that doesn’t mean fans aren’t still talking about the show. Among discussion of what Season 6 will bring, talk of a Walking Dead movie has stirred up again after showrunner and creator Robert Kirkman signed a two-year first-look deal with Universal Pictures. The Hollywood Reporter reported the deal on April 15.

In an interview with Andrew Lincoln, perhaps better known as Rick Grimes, the Philippine Daily Inquirer asks the Walking Dead star his thoughts on the show heading to the theater. Lincoln admits it’s a prospect the cast has dreamed about and would be excited to see happen, also mentioning the broad horizons the show could take as a film.

“That would be amazing. It’s something we’ve been talking about and dreamt of because it would be cool to see some snow. We were all going, just not to have to film in Atlanta where it gets to 100 degrees!

What would be amazing is that you can play with form, time and chronology and maybe also rediscover characters who are no longer in the show. Certainly, with that format, you can do something very interesting and ambitious.”

Cinema Blend reports there were rumors of a Walking Dead movie back in 2012 that obviously didn’t pan out. However, with Kirkman recently signing a deal with Universal Pictures, it’s not definite at this point but still possible the Walking Dead could head to movie theaters.

With the Walking Dead branching out in a spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead, the show remains highly popular, and a film version would likely be as popular with fans. The spin-off will prove whether there’s more story to tell, and if it does well, then the likelihood of a Walking Dead film could grow.

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Kirkman revealed Fear the Walking Dead is not a prequel and the origin of the zombie plague won’t be revealed. The show takes place in Los Angeles with a completely different cast of characters.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, sources say no talks about a Walking Dead movie are happening at the moment, but Kirkman is excited about the deal with Universal.

“In high school I watched Army of Darkness pretty much every night before bed, so I’ve seen that Universal logo steering around the planet we call home about a thousand times. The idea of producing movies that will bear that logo is just unbelievably awesome. We couldn’t find better partners than the team at Universal. I believe this partnership is going to help David [executive producer of the Walking Dead] and I achieve all the goals we set out to accomplish when we founded Skybound five years ago.”
