Bruno Mars Tops Billboard Hot 100 While Kanye West Flop Song Falls Out

Bruno Mars is once again at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Uptown Funk,” a collaboration with Mark Ronson. Billboard gushes about the success of Bruno Mars’ latest hit.

“Mark Ronson’s ‘Uptown Funk!’ featuring Bruno Mars leads the Billboard Hot 100 for a fourth week. Plus, as it takes over atop Radio Songs, returns to the top of Streaming Songs and continues to top Digital Songs, the track joins an elite list of hits to lead all four overarching songs charts at the same time.”

Bruno Mars is now one of the most successful solo acts in music history. Paul Grein from Yahoo! Music expands on the success of Mars’ latest triumph.

“‘Uptown Funk!’ is Mars’ sixth #1 hit. Only two other artists have had as many as six #1 hits so far in this decade (that is, since January 2010). They are Rihanna and Katy Perry, who have each had eight. Among male artists, Eminem is runner-up, with three #1 hits in this decade.”

Mars and Ronson’s hit has received almost universal praise. The review of “Uptown Funk” from Music Times pretty much summarizes what most think about the song.

“‘Uptown Funk’ marries the worlds of ’70s funk with modern pop music, pulling the track into 2014 with ease. From the very first moments, when backup singers rush in with baritone bumps, it’s clear that “Uptown Funk” is fire. Hand claps and a high guitar riff set the stage for the modern funky tune before Ronson and Mars kick in with the lyrics.”

Last year, Bruno Mars headlined the Super Bowl Halftime Show and gave a performance many thought was amazing. While Mars’ star is on the rise, another solo act, Kanye West, appears to be falling. West’s “Only One” collaboration with Paul McCartney, which was hyped up as the collaboration of the year, has fallen off the Hot 100 after only three weeks. This isn’t good news for Kanye West, who needed a hit to kick off his upcoming album. Yeesus, released in 2013, is widely considered a flop by Kanye’s standards.

Kanye West is expected to have more luck with his Rihanna collaboration. “FourFiveSeconds” is an iTunes hit, but the song’s success has more to do with it being Rihanna’s new single than anything having to do with West. Perhaps Kanye should collaborate with Bruno Mars for another guaranteed hit.
