Rooney Mara Gets Nipples Pierced for “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” Role

Rooney Mara is really getting into character. Mara, who plays Lisbeth Sanders in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” has already learned how to ride a motorcycle, and now the actress has revealed that she has gotten her lips, ears, eyebrow, nose, and nipples pierced for the new David Fincher movie.

Mara said that she had to change her look drastically to match Lisbeth Sanders’ look in the movie, but she didn’t want to feel like she was always in costume. Mara said that her nipple piercing was “necessary” to get into the head of Lisbeth Sanders.

Mara told Allure Magazine:

“I’m naked quite a lot in the movie, and I thought, she has [a nipple piercing] in the book, and she should have it [in the movie]… Because of all the tattoos and the makeup and the piercings, and the physical transformations my body has to go through, it would always feel sort of like I was in costume, even if I was naked. It just felt like a good [piercing] to get — a necessary one to get.”

The New York Post reports that Mara didn’t even have her ears pierced before she started shooting “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

Mara told the Daily Mail:

“I didn’t even have pierced ears. They put four holes in each ear, and, weirdly, that hurt the most. It was all very organized…. With David, everything is measured and carefully considered. He wants what he sees in his head.”

“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” opens on December 21st. Here’s an 8-minute look at the new adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s novel.

Rooney Mara isn’t the first person to step into the shoes of Lisbeth Sanders. Noomi Rapace took on the role for the Swedish adaptation.
