Angelina Jolie dropped a few pounds from her already-thin frame last year, and someone close to the Unbroken director recently revealed her weight loss secret.
Unfortunately, most people won’t be able to try the Angelina Jolie diet after overindulging during the holidays — it’s a diet that requires millions of dollars, hours of hard work, and a good dose of creativity. According to Unbroken star Miyavi, Jolie’s diet secret is directing an epic, Oscar-bait movie.
During an interview with HuffPost Live, Miyavi talked about Angelina’s weight loss.
“She was so determined. I was also surprised how skinny she got. You know, she was not eating much. I felt so bad I was the only one who got fat during filming.”
Miyavi’s costars also lost weight because of Unbroken, but they didn’t do it because they were stressed out or working too hard — Jack O’Connell, Finn Wittrock, and Garrett Hedlund all had to go on diets for their challenging roles. Unbroken is based on the life of World War II hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini. Part of the film focuses on soldiers struggling to survive after a plane crash leaves them stranded in the Pacific Ocean for weeks, and part of it takes place in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. Needless to say, the actors were portraying people who didn’t get to eat very much.
Angelina Jolie’s eating habits have fascinated the tabloids for years. In 2011, In Touch Weekly claimed that Jolie’s bizarre diet includes food “obsessions.” Angelina allegedly eats just one low-calorie food, such as soup, for days at a time. An insider also implied that Angie doesn’t eat enough.
“Her daily diet varies. Sometimes it will be just green tea and nuts. Other days, it will be red meat and red wine, and then, back to tea and some tiny portion of protein.”
Angelina Jolie can’t be too happy about Miyavi bringing up her weight, because right now she wants the media focus to be on Unbroken. She’s been heavily promoting the movie, and one of her recent publicity stops was The Daily Show. After her interview with Jon Stewart, Angelina surprised fans by signing autographs and posing for selfies with them outside The Daily Show studio. She even comforted a fan who had a panic attack, wiping tears from the girl’s eyes.
During an interview with Metro, Jolie revealed that winning an Oscar in the Best Director category would “mean a great deal to her.”
Moviegoers can decide for themselves whether Angelina Jolie’s stress-induced weight loss was worth the result and whether Unbroken deserves an Oscar nod when the film hits theaters on December 25.
