Faulty Airbags Force Urgent Recall Of 4.7 Million Cars: Is Your Car On This Massive List?

Over 4.7 million cars in the U.S. are being recalled due to faulty airbags, and one of them could be yours. The Washington Post reports that this “urgent recall” was issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Monday.

The recalled automobiles include various BMW, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, and Toyota models with model years ranging from 2001 to 2011. Manufactured by Takata, the defective airbags have already caused the deaths of four people in the United States. See a full list of the cars included in Monday’s recall below.

The NHTSA recall states that the deaths were caused by the rupture of inflator mechanisms in the airbags that sprayed drivers and passengers with metal fragments. CBS News states that the passenger or driver air bags (or both) could be affected, depending on the make and model of the recalled car.

“This message comes with urgency. The agency has been investigating the problem since June, and has cited reports of six inflators rupturing.”

The Washington Post reports that the recall is especially urgent for vehicle owners who live in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands. Anyone with one of the cars listed below should take them into their local dealer immediately.

The list of recalled cars below includes various makes and models that are equipped with faulty Takata airbags. If you find your car on the list, enter the vehicle identification number (VIN) into a form on the NHTSA site — SaferCar.gov. In addition to the air bag recall, you will find out if your car is part of any other recall.
