Anwan Glover Of ’12 Years A Slave’, ‘The Wire’ – Knifed in D.C. Nightclub


Anwan Glover, star of the hit television show The Wire and the film 12 Years a Slave has been stabbed in a nightclub in Washington D.C., says the Washington Post.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 3rd, while Anwan Glover was on the second floor of Cafe Asia in Washington D.C., a restaurant on 720 I Street NW, an as-yet unknown assailant punched Glover in the face. Reportedly, when Anwan turned to face his attacker, someone else hit him with something in the back of the head. The attack from the rear caused Glover to slip on the slick floor, and he fell to the ground. While on the floor, Anwan Glover claims to have been kicked numerous times before hearing someone shout, “He has a knife!” Glover then felt a sharp pain in his right side.

The 41-year-old actor was taken via ambulance to George Washington University Hospital. There, Anwan Glove was treated for a laceration on the right side of his torso.

A second assault was reported at early Sunday morning at Club Asia. That one happened at approximately 1:30 a.m. – close to half an hour before the stabbing of Anwan Glover. The first victim, a 37-year-old woman, told police she got into an argument with a man she didn’t’ know. The stranger then punched the woman in the mouth and was escorted out of Club Asia.

Paul Metcalf, spokesman for the Washington D.C. police, says he has no reason to believe that the attack on Anwan Glover and the attack on the woman earlier in the evening are related.

Anwan Glover most recently appeared in the Oscar-winning film, 12 Years a Slave as the character Cape and was a star on the hit television police drama The Wire from 2004 to 2008.

Growing up in Washington’s Columbia Heights neighborhood, Anwan Glover was reportedly shot 13 times during his youth. Those experiences prompted him to adopt anti-violence campaigns as a cause. Glover has spoken out numerous times about the need for gun-law reform and against violence in general. According to US Weekly, Anwan’s brother died as a result of a shooting in 2007, and his son was wounded from a shooting in Washington D.C. while at a party in 2011.

When Anwan Glover was on The Wire, he played Slim Charles, a gangster and enforcer for what was called The Barksdale Organization and appeared in 27 episodes. Besides acting, Glover is also plays in a musical group called the Backyard Band. Anwan and his band played Saturday afternoon at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia. That afternoon concert was called the 2014 Summer Spirit Festival and featured musician Lauryn Hill, Janell Monae, and others.

As of Sunday afternoon, Anwan Glover’s condition remains unknown.
