‘Titanfall’ Single Player Campaign A Possibility For Sequel

The Titanfall single player campaign may have existed at one point, but Respawn had decided against putting it in for the game’s debut release. It appears that may change with the sequels.

Respawn’s reason for initially not putting any time into a Titanfall single player mode was that they had noticed what gamers actually spent most of their time on. Many of us give the campaign about a month or so, but then we turn to the online multiplayer for the rest of the time we actively play at all. Most developers spend a majority of their time on single player campaigns and Respawn felt it was wasted when the multiplayer modes receive most gamers’ time.

That was why Respawn Entertainment figured they wouldn’t waste their time on a gameplay mode that really didn’t get much attention from gamers after the initial few weeks. They spent all of their time working on making the multiplayer modes as robust as they could, as well as dealing with the challenge of making the Xbox One version work online with the Xbox 360 and PC versions. There was an alleged single player mode but Respawn had decided against adding it.

It appears a Titanfall single player campaign could debut publicly in the future. Respawn has already put most of their time into the multiplayer game, so they probably don’t have to do much on that level, aside from adding things (hopefully more variety in Titans?). However, now they can focus more of their time on a single player mode to draw in gamers who most likely skipped the first game due to its online-only style. Perfect Dark style AI bots could be used to recreate the multiplayer mode for offline play.

Some gamers are just lone wolves and don’t want to play online, and some simply want to practice first.

Respawn Entertainment COO Dusty Welch opened up about the possibility of a Titanfall single player campaign:

“Campaign mode, I think, was interesting but ultimately not as engaging or rewarding as we would’ve liked. It kind of begs the question for us – do you go further in that? Do you trim that back?

“Would I rule it out for the future? Certainly not. But I think that there’s a lot of reward in continuing to push the paradigm that Titanfall introduced, which is this always connected, real live visceral multiplayer universe. We learned a lot, and I think it’s up to us to think about how we apply the learning to make the next game even more expansive and more engaging than the first.”

While Respawn doesn’t see it as a necessity, a Titanfall single player campaign could bring in another group of gamers and increase profits even more than the first game did. A single player mode might not be very expansive in Titanfall 2, but it might be just enough to engage the gamers who passed on it the first time.
