Microsoft has a new mobile software company in its hands. Executives have announced the acquisition of MobiComp, an eight-year-old Portugal-based business specializing in cell phone data backup and cell phone integration with online services.

MobiComp’s programs include MobileKeeper Backup & Restore, MobileKeeper Sharing & Communities, and Active mTicker.

The move marks Microsoft’s biggest investment in Portugal following a national development partnership signed by Bill Gates two years ago. Microsoft plans to maintain MobiComp’s Portugal office as a general research and development center. MobiComp itself will become part of Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business division.

The terms of the deal are not being disclosed.
