Blizzard adding ‘region linking’ to StarCraft II

When StarCraft II launched last year, there was a bit of a backlash regarding the lack of cross-region online play. Well, there’s some good news and bad news about that.

The good news is that Blizzard will be launching ‘region linking’ alongside the start of season 3, which is currently scheduled to kick off around July 18. The bad news is that ‘region linking’ doesn’t mean cross-region play in the traditional sense.

Instead of opening up online play across all regions, Blizzard has chosen to instead link regions together in pairs. North America will be linked to Latin America, Europe will be linking to Russia, and Korea will be linked to Taiwan.

It isn’t the full-on cross-region play we’ve been hoping for, but at least it’s something. If nothing else, at least each region will get some fresh competition and new community-made maps.
