Teen Dates Grandmother In High School Prom [Video]

Prom season is coming and teens are rushing to get dates. That is not the case for senior student Austin Dennison, a 19-year-old teen from Rockford, Ohio who decided to take his 89-year-old grandmother to prom.

Delores Dennison, Austin’s grandmother, never went to her prom. When Delores was a teen in high school, times were tough and every penny had to be spent for basic needs.

According to Austin, he got the idea of taking his grandmother to prom from his economics teacher, Lucas Minnich. Minnich told Austin that his older brother once took their grandmother to prom. Since Delores never got the chance to experience prom, Austin asked her and she willingly accepted. “She said that she would be honored. I told her that it would be my privilege,” Austin said.

Before accepting the invitation, Delores asked Austin if he’s sure that he does not want to take a young lady instead. Austin answered his grandmother, “I want you.”

Austin is the type of teen that a father would want her daughter to marry. He attends church regularly, plays in the school band, and is an Eagle Scout who plays for the high school’s basketball, baseball, and football teams.

The first thing that Delores had to do was find an appropriate dress for the prom. She was looking for prom dresses, but decided the ones available were “too high or too low.” She eventually decided on wearing a blue dress and bringing a clutch purse where she could place her puffer and nitro that she uses for breathing.

Parkway High School’s prom was held on April 26. That night, Austin took her grandmother to one of her favorite restaurants where she ordered an omelette and he had pancakes. The teen serenaded his grandmother and presented her with a pretty pearl necklace.

After dinner, the teen and her grandmother went to prom where they were greeted with a standing ovation. Delores enjoyed looking at the young ladies with their dates. She said that everybody was so polite.

One of Austin’s friends even tried to make a move on his grandmother and asked if he could dance with her. However, Delores didn’t have the energy.

Austin had another surprise for his grandmother. He escorted his grandmother to the dance floor as Frank Sinatra’s song “How I love the Kisses of Dolores” played.

Austin said that the song has a special place in his grandmother’s heart. “I chose the song because Grandpa Ed used to sing that song to her.”

Delores may have missed the chance to go to her own prom, but the experience she had with her grandson was worth the years of waiting.
