Facebook’s Giraffe Picture Meme Game Explained [Spoilers!]

giraffe picture facebook 2013

If you’ve seen the giraffe picture meme circulating Facebook, or just a lot of people who have updated their profile images to feature a giraffe, you may be wondering why the sudden trend.

Is the giraffe picture some sort of inside joke? An awareness thing? Did a famous giraffe die somewhere in the world, only to leave behind legions of mourning fans honoring his giraffy memory via a Facebook profile picture?

Maybe a little bit of one, definitely not two, and as far as we know, not three.

Update: The Inquisitr addresses rumors that Anonymous is using the Facebook giraffe meme as a way to hack users and empty bank accounts.

What we do know is this. Sometime last week, the giraffe picture began appearing in place of friends’ Facebook profile pics on the social network. As it turns out, the giraffe picture is a punishment of sorts in a new Facebook riddle game — the origins of which are unclear.

Then the riddle, which has been increasingly circulating (and we promise to spoil it in this post.) One version of the giraffe picture meme post reads as such:

“It’s 3:00 am, the doorbell rings, and you wake up. Unexpected visitors — it’s your parents, and they are there for breakfast. You have strawberry jam, honey, wine, bread, and cheese. What is the first thing you open?”

Well? Answer correctly, or you too will “have” to post a giraffe picture and spread the meme.

As with many viral trends, the giraffe picture Facebook meme is self-perpetuating… and given the ambiguity of the riddle, a great many will get it wrong.

Like with many riddles, the giraffe picture game also relies on misdirection — an unusual circumstance is the setting for the scenario (because most people are sound asleep in bed at 3 AM, with few unexpected social calls occurring at this hour.)

On top of that, the items listed are all ones that require opening to a degree. A bottle of wine, a jar of jam, honey, a package of cheese or bread. All are seemingly unrelated to the worrisome circumstance of both your parents arriving on your doorstep unannounced in the middle of the night, and all added to up the level of confusion about the riddle.

Now to the answer — it actually varies. We believe the giraffe picture game is seeking “the door” as the answer, an item not listed among the items meant to be considered by the riddled party, and one whose opening is necessary to kick off any level of middle of the night breakfast with parents.

However, the giraffe picture game is not meant to be about solving the riddle, it’s about getting more players… and piquing interest with the profile image change. As for the other answer? “Your eyes” has been floated as the real giraffe riddle answer, but it also seems that unlike the door, eyes open reflexively for most upon waking and thus should not be counted in the question of what one “chooses” to open first.

Have you played the giraffe picture game on Facebook, and received the consequence of a changed pic?

wrong. so what if you opened your eyes reflexively, you still opened them before you went to the door. The riddle begins after the colon with the words "it's 3 AM" so your eyes and the door are both fair game, but you opened your eyes first, and the fact that they were opened reflexively doesn't change the fact that you opened them.

the door isn't open until you open it, but you opened your eyes before that. The riddle begins after the colon with the words "it's 3 AM" so your eyes and the door are both fair game, but you opened your eyes first, and the fact that they were opened reflexively doesn't change the fact that you opened it.

It says, "What is the first thing you open" AFTER it tells you that you are awake and have discovered that your parents are at the door. You could not discover who is at the door without already having your eyes open. With this information given before hand, the question would have to be "What is the first thing you openED?" Past tense. You cannot change the rules of English simply to fit your riddle.

Technically Dan you are wrong !! First of all you don't OPEN your eyes, you raise your eye lids !! Second thing is you don't have to have your eyes open while you're awake !!!

The answer is either your eyes or the door. Both are correct. If you want to be an a$$ to your friends…you say eyes….if you want to be nice…you say door.

Well, if you count out opening your eyes…if you sleep with the bedroom door closed like I do that would be the first thing to open before you even get to the front door

April Meleski – Just because you "wake up" doesn't mean you've opened up your eyes already. I know I've gotten woken up but resisted opening my eyes for quite a while. And, even according to the type of reasoning you're using, you would not only have to have opened your eyes, but the door in order to actually know why your parents are there! So then there would have to be another answer. I believe the entire purpose of this riddle is to make people think "the door" since most people won't think of "your eyes." Thus, "your eyes" is the better riddle answer.

April Meleski That's the problem.. there is more than one version of the "riddle" going around. One is a debatable "eyes" answer (though seriously, how would you know who was at the door if you didn't LOOK – and it doesn't say what did you open first, it says what DO you open first. The other one is CLEARLY the door answer… but either way, you are right, it's logical for it to be door. That's the nature of the riddle…

    The riddle reads..
    It's 3am, doorbell rings, u wake up…
What is the first thing u open? The answer would then b "the door" because it is asking what is the first thing you open after tht set up. So, you are already awake when u open the first thing.

Tony Coty blind people still open their eyes if they're asleep and the doorbell rings, waking them up. But whatever. I think the whole thing is silly and making people argue about stupid things. Giraffes are adorable. Unless you're Eddie Izzard, then they're apparently evil.

I was the first to get the answer correct. It is not the door, it is your eyes.Took me all of 2 seconds to answer it. It was a fun little game. I wrote a poem about it and made a video using a song I made up as I went along. The door makes no sense unless you walk with your eyes closed to the door. I wrote a poem and made a music video the lyrics were made off the cub then I added some back ground music, though for some reason you can barely hear the instruments.
