Tom Hanks may have a couple of Oscars and a dozen classic movies under his belt but that doesn’t mean he’s satisfied with his acting abilities. The A-list star, who is getting ready for his Broadway debut in Nora Ephron’s Lucky Guy , said that working on stage gives him a chance to reinvent himself.
Hanks has built a good guy persona over the years. He rarely plays the bad guy, hardly curses, and has been dubbed by many as Hollywood’s nicest actor .
With his new Broadway play, Hanks gets to step out of his comfort zone a little to play someone who’s pretty unlikeable. Hanks said he initially turned down the role because “McAlary sounded like a real a** hole.”
But Hanks is now fully immersed in his new Broadway role. The play begins its 15-week run this Friday and Hanks is looking forward to reinventing himself.
It’s been more than a decade since Hanks’ last Oscar nomination. The actor’s star hasn’t exactly cooled ( Cloud Atlas was a bust but the internet went insane yesterday when rumors of Toy Story 4 started to circulate) but he is still looking to improve up on his craft.
Hanks told the NY Times :
“Anytime you go off to do something new, you’ve involved in a reinvention, and any actor who says otherwise is just trying to lower expectations… Look, the title is ‘Lucky Guy.’ It’s about somebody who is almost good enough to deserve what he achieves. And I understand that… I still feel sometimes that I’d like to be as good as so-and-so actor. I see some other actors’ work, and I think I’ll never get there. I wish I could.”
