Walmart is one of the largest retail chains in the world. The company employs approximately 2.2 million people around the globe and 1.4 million workers in the United States alone. About 75 percent of Walmart store managers began as hourly associates.
The Walmart company was founded in 1962 by Sam Walton. The first store opened in Rogers, Arkansas. Walton was said to have been so inspired by the success of his five and dime store in a small town main street business that he decided to open a large Walmart retail store at the age of 44.
While Walmart provides a multitude of jobs, some feel the big box store has killed small businesses. The topics of unionization of workers and minimum wage pay also heated Walmart pros and cons debates.
