Verizon formed as a merger in 1990 between mobile carrier GTE and the Bell Atlantic company. At the time it was introduced, Verizon was a landline service carrier with 63 million users, and they also had 25 million mobile phone customers. One of America’s top companies, Verizon made $127 billion in revenue in 2014. In legal news, Verizon has been questioned in regards to privacy violations. Verizon is the sponsor of many major sports tournament events, including the Indy 500, the NFL, the NHL, and is the owner of multiple sports stadiums. Verizon promotes philanthropy and gives an estimated $70 million annually to various causes.
