Valentine’s Day began as a Roman Catholic holiday to remember the Christians murdered for their faith. Around 1835, Valentine’s Day became associated with the early greeting card industry. Valentine’s Day cards are thought to have started due to the emergence of a national postal service during a time when illiteracy was prevalent. The earliest surviving Valentine’s Day poem is from the late 1400s. In modern times, Valentine’s Day is a secular holiday that has spread around the world through American companies such as Krispie Kreme and Hershey’s. Valentine’s Day was based on Valentine of Terni, who was a Christian martyr that lived around the year 500 in Italy.
