As a comedian based in San Francisco in the mid-1970s, Robin Williams was later credited with starting the San Francisco Comedy Renaissance. In addition to comedy, Robin Williams was an award-winning dramatic actor, starring in films like Dead Poets Society and Awakenings. A strong advocate for many causes, Robin Williams championed the homeless and the mentally ill.
