Formed as a result of Simon Cowell’s UK TV show The X Factor, One Direction was organized as a band for a competition in July of 2010. Originally starting with Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and Liam Payne, Malik left the band on March 25, 2015. Considered a celebrity boy band, One Direction’s popularity is similar to the Beatles. One Direction has had four record-breaking albums, including Four, This Is Us, and Midnight Memories. Although they started as a bubblegum pop or power-pop band, One Direction’s music style now also embraces 70s and 80s pop-rock influences. One Direction is often noted in the press for being a strong supporter of children’s charities and nonprofits for people living with disabilities.
