Newtown commonly refers to Newtown, Connecticut, which is a community of around 27,000 in the northeastern United States. On December 14, 2012, the town and the nation were rocked by a brutal mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The shooter, Adam Lanza, would take his own life in the attack, but not before killing his mother (the night before) as well as 20 children and six faculty/staff members at the school. The Newtown shooting would ignite calls for stricter gun control laws, spearheaded by President Barack Obama, although the efforts ultimately failed. Since Newtown, there have been 141 school shootings, with 134 resulting in the death of one or more persons.
