MSNBC is a cable news and entertainment network owned by the NBCUniversal News Group. The network was founded in 1996 as a partnership between MSN and NBC, though Microsoft divested its stake in the network in 2005. The network is noted for take a left-leaning stance, with hosts that have included Al Sharpton and Rachel Maddow.

Unlike its more conservative competitor, Fox News, MSNBC has embraced its stance with the 2010 campaign “Lean Forward” and the 2013 website tagline “What Progressives Have Been Waiting For.” However, MSNBC has also failed to gain the same audience as Fox News, consistently falling behind in the ratings to conservative hosts including Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity.
