John Boehner, the Republican speaker of the United States House of Representatives, came to power in 2011 during the administration of President Barack Obama. He took over for Democrat Nancy Pelosi after Republicans battered her with ObamaCare in the 2010 midterm elections. Boehner started his political career in 1985 when he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1990, taking office in January of 1991. In September of 2015, Boehner, a Catholic, announced his retirement shortly following the historic visit of Pope Francis. Boehner has been married since 1973 and has two daughters with wife Deborah Gunlack. While his battles with President Obama are well-documented, Obama has called John Boehner a “patriot.”
