Hamas, a 1987 offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, has stated that it wishes for a return of the area that is now Israel to that of a Palestinian State. This has contributed heavily to ongoing conflicts and tensions between Israelis and Palestinians for three decades. In recent years, Hamas has talked of a truce with Israel provided the country recedes borders to its pre-1967 position and allows refugees/descendants dating back to the 1940s the chance to return to the area and establish a separate Palestinian State. The United States, Japan, Israel, Egypt, Canada, and the European Union all agree that Hamas is a terrorist organization. Russia, Iran, Switzerland, Norway, Brazil, China, and Turkey disagree with this characterization.
