Most candidates within today’s GOP subscribe to Judeo-Christian philosophies on social issues and believe in lower taxes. Established in 1854, the GOP is a successor of the old Whig and Free Soil Parties. Notable presidents include Abraham Lincoln, who was the very first Republican commander-in-chief and leader of the country during the Civil War. The most recent U.S. GOP presidents are George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. There have been 18 GOP presidents as of 2015.
