Ferguson refers to the city of Ferguson, Missouri, which became nationally known in 2014 following the death of unarmed teen Michael Brown. The police shooting of Brown, an 18-year-old African-American male, occurred on August 9. Brown was associated with a “strong-arm” convenience store robbery caught on video in the moments leading up to a violent altercation with Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson. The incident started the “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” movement, referring to the last lines that some witnesses claim Brown said to Wilson. Wilson was exonerated but resigned his post amid a series of public riots and a federal investigation.
