Debuting in 1979, ESPN established the idea of a cable sports network and has grown into the most influential force in sports media. The network grew from broadcasts of offbeat and college sports in the 1980s to eventually take on all of the major sports. Its flagship show, SportsCenter, has also grown into the most popular and influential sports program on television. ESPN has also been a trailblazer, with its early broadcasts of the NFL Draft and NCAA men’s basketball tournament helping bring both to a much wider audience. ESPN now operates 11 different spinoff channels and a website, ESPN.com.
