Detroit has the highest population of any Michigan city, with more than 5.3 million living in the Combined Statistical Area (CSA), according to the 2010 U.S. Census. The auto industry’s expansion was a large part of Detroit’s growth throughout the 20th Century, but in every census since 1950, it has bled population. Founded in 1701 and incorporated in 1806, the city grew into a manufacturing hub that suffered as companies fled for more business-friendly environments throughout the 1980s and ’90s. Detroit is home to professional sports teams in all four major sports: The Detroit Tigers (baseball), Detroit Red Wings (hockey), Detroit Lions (football), and Detroit Pistons (basketball), each of which continue to have loyal followings.
