One of the major parties of the United States over the past 50 years, the Democrats have been elected to 15 out of 43 presidencies. Thomas Jefferson is considered the founder of the Democrats in America, and the 1792 party was founded on the ancient Greek ideals of democracy. Democrats in the recent past have been associated with liberalism as opposed to conservatism. Celebrities that became leaders of the Democrats (or vice versa) include Melissa Gilbert (“Laura” from Little House on the Prairie), comedian Al Franken, and Jerry Springer. Democrats are distinguished in the news for being pro-gay marriage, pro-choice, and against minority discrimination.
