‘The Wolverine’ Full Trailer Finally Debuts Online [Video]

Better late than never, right? James Mangold’s The Wolverine has finally released its first trailer online , and let me tell you: This is the Wolverine movie we’ve been waiting for.

Synopsis for T he Wolverine :

“Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.”

A few oblique comic references in the synopsis end up being fully justified in the trailer. We’ve known for a while that Silver Samurai will be the film’s main antagonist (played by Will Yun Lee), and that the film will take place after the events of X-3 .

What we get in the trailer is a more tangible picture of a Logan who is struggling with his own immortality after seeing a butt-load of his friends die in his last chronological outing. We also see a unique corner of the origin story (which I won’t spoil for you, but it’s pretty cool).

Now that last part in the synopsis, about the “new Wolverine,” well, that’s probably the most interesting thing about the trailer. Instead of being a 2-minute actioner , the trailer puts Logan’s main emotional and physical struggles right at the front, and while I’m hardly-able-to-stay-in-my-chair-excited when he pops his claws, I’m also wincing in pain along with him.

I haven’t read the comic book by by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller that The Wolverine is based on (I know, I know) so I don’t know how much of the trailer’s content carries over from the book. Maybe you can let us know in the comments below.

The Wolverine releases in the United States on July 26, 2013. Here’s the long-awaited (read: Late) trailer.
