Summer Jam Riot Shut Down As Police Tear Gas And Pepper Spray Crowd Outside

Hot 97’s Summer Jam annual concert was plagued by rioting Sunday as a group of around 2,000 people — by police estimates — attempted to storm the front gate. Upon being met with preventative measures from the police, the people appear to have begun to riot and throw bottles at police officers, according to social media accounts from the event.

Multiple arrests have been made outside Summer Jam, and at least one journalist reported being hit with a riot should by police. Tear gas and pepper spray are also reportedly in the air.

Videos and photos posted to social media live from Summer Jam have been the primary means for the story to break across the web. On-the-ground users are documenting the confrontation with police that appears still be continuing outside of the MetLife stadium.

Various social media activity from journalists on the ground has supplied much of the initial information about the confrontation. Most recently, Nick Tempey from New York website Gothamist is tweeting that police are calling for the concert to end early as Kendrick Lamar continues to play on.

Hot 97 is the radio station that puts on the Summer Jam festival — often billed as the best hip-hop festival in the nation — in East Rutherford, New Jersey every year. Summer Jam has existed in some form or another since 1994.
