Oscar winner Christoph Waltz hosted Saturday Night Live last night , and though there were plenty of laughs to be had, the best skit saw the Austrian actor as Jesus Christ among other Tarantino-esque versions of our lord and savior’s Biblical posse.
In an obvious and clever parody of Tarantino films like Django Unchained , Kill Bill, and Inglourious Basterds , Waltz plays Jesus Christ alongside SNL versions of Brad Pitt (Taran Killam) Samuel L. Jackson (Jay Pharaoh) and Ving Rhames (Kenan Thompson).
In the skit, Waltz’s Jesus gets revenge on the Romans who want him crucified.
Hilariously, when a Roman centurion exclaims “Jesus H. Christ,” in Waltz’s presence, the Austrian actor responds: “The H. is silent.”
Christoph Waltz may seem to be an odd choice to host SNL , but the lauded actor went into his duties with that in mind. During his opening monologue, he made reference to his stature as a dramatic actor and confusion over his heritage (for the record and for the third time, he is Austrian, not German).
In any case, his deadpan delivery and eccentric quirks were fitted to each skit perfectly, eliciting many laughs in my living room, and it was great to see Waltz let his hair down for his SNL gig while still playing to his strengths.
Another great religiously-themed skit saw Waltz playing an unnamed Pope (obviously based on retiring Pope Benedict XVI) in a commercial for Papal Securities, which helps popes work out the finer points of living on a fixed income.
