Whether you like his ridiculous hat or not, Pharrell Williams’ song “Happy” has been an infectious chart climber for months. Getting a major push with his performance at the Academy Awards, Williams has been enjoying major success for the song as well as his collaboration with Daft Punk on the track “Get Lucky.”

Pharrell Williams went on Oprah Prime to discuss his most recent success despite being in the industry as a producer for a number of years. As a solo artist Pharrell Williams didn’t really “make it” until his collaboration with Daft Punk, despite releasing a critically acclaimed solo disc in 2006. At the time he was mostly known for producing mega hits for pop acts like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. Eight years later and Pharrell, along with his giant hat, holds his own as a solo artist.

The “Happy” singer was so overwhelmed by his success that he started to weep on Oprah.

The humble singer grew emotional when Oprah showed Williams’ a fan tribute video that gathered clips of fans all around the world dancing and singing to his song “Happy.” After the video ended Williams cried and tried to vocalize his gratitude for his success.

As the singer tried to gather himself, the media mogul said to Pharrell:

“I was just thinking about your grandmother. I bet she didn’t even imagine that. I know. It’s beautiful. It’s being used for something greater than yourself.”

Through tears the singer said:

“Why am I crying on Oprah? It’s overwhelming, because it’s like I love what I do, and I just appreciate the fact that people have believed in me for so long that I could make it to this point to feel that.”

Oprah added to Pharrell’s comments about why the song has touched so many people.

“I really get it. I so now get why it’s so infectious because it came from such a clear space, that the energy was absolutely uninterrupted by anything other than allowing it to flow from heart to heart, and that’s what happens with you see it.”

Lately Williams is making numerous appearances on talk shows to promote his sophomoric album G I R L . Last week he stopped by the Ellen DeGeneres show , and shared his political thoughts on equality.

“You’ll be surprised but when I say equality, I mean equality for everybody! Everybody! Who are you telling who they can marry and who they can’t? What is this? Like…this is 2014!”

You can now purchase Pharrell’s album on multiple platforms.
