It was reported by Entertainment Weekly that Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. bosses will finish Season 5 as if the show will go off the air. While S.H.I.E.L.D. has legions of fans, their ratings have taken a hit. One would think that with all the Marvel movies and small screen success it has had over the years, AOS could survive and possibly take on CW’s Smallville and its 10-year run. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
If this is indeed the last season we get of S.H.I.E.L.D., then it’s only one way for the show to go out — and that’s with an appearance by the Avengers. Think about it, what better way than to send Agent Phil Coulson out than to bring in the characters who made him who he is. Without Phil, there would be no Avengers and vice versa.
Remember in the first Avengers movie what drove Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor to work together? It was the death of Phil. Before that, the team was engulfed in entirely too much in-fighting to see eye-to-eye. The Hulk and Thor were doing battle, Captain America and Iron Man were basically fighting to run the team, and Nick Fury just sat back hoping they could get it together.
It wasn’t until Loki killed Phil Coulson that the team had a purpose, so to speak. As if saving the world wasn’t enough. This is what the creators of Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. must take into consideration. It doesn’t matter if the rumors are leaked or not. Imagine an episode with Coulson, Daisy, Mack, Fitz, Jemma, May, and Yo-Yo flanked by Cap, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor.

As it stands now, it appears the agents will do battle with the Kree for the remaining episodes of Season 5, and they will have their hands full. With Coulson possibly dying, they will look to someone else for leadership. What’s also intriguing about the situation is that the Avengers have no idea that Phil is still alive. Since he was the reason the team came together to fight as a unit, it’s only fitting that they be the ones to save his life since they failed the first time around.
