Should We Forgive Kevin Spacey Just Because He Is ‘Seeking Treatment’? [Opinion]

Amidst the allegations of sexual abuse by Anthony Rapp, Kevin Spacey has not only revealed to the world that he is gay, but he is also set to get treatment.

PEOPLE confirmed that Spacey will be checking into a facility soon. His representative said that they are already taking the steps to have him under evaluation.

Actor Anthony Rapp made it clear in a confession with BuzzFeed that the House of Cards actor allegedly made sexual advances towards him when he was just 14. Rapp said that he is standing by the other alleged assault and rape victims of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

“I came forward with my story, standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out, to shine a light and hopefully make a difference, as they have done for me.”

After Rapp’s confession, Spacey immediately released a letter of apology, saying he did not remember the encounter.

“I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor. I’m beyond horrified to hear his story,” Spacey said in a statement posted on his Twitter account.

“I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years,” Spacey wrote.

He also came out on his Twitter post and many thought the timing was simply ridiculous.

What makes the issue even more concerning is the fact that a scene from Family Guy 12 years ago has featured a clip where Stewie Griffin is seen running away, naked, claiming he just got out of Kevin Spacey’s basement.

Moreover, there are new allegations that were submitted anonymously from the House of Cards crew, noting that Spacey has made the entire production a “toxic” workplace because he has allegedly been assaulting younger male members of the team.

With all of the new allegations Spacey is facing, does he just get to “heal” himself of these alleged crimes?

House of Cards Much?

For all those who have been following House of Cards relentlessly, you would know that Spacey’s performance is impeccable. You watch him and you understand the story. You learn from what he taught you and you feel like you know the political arena more than anyone.

With Spacey’s new diversion tactics, plain apology, and uncomfortable coming-out moment, everything felt like a move from the Francis Underwood textbook.

He first acknowledged Rapp’s confession, but did not admit to the crime. Next, he uses his being gay to appeal to the public, but apparently that did not work. Now, he is watering down the allegations, hinting that this is something that he probably has no control over and that it could simply be a mental disease he could “fix.”

Spacey’s allegations are no more subtler than Weinstein’s. The only difference is that Spacey is gay. There may be some bias in approaching and looking at these two cases, but they are the same. Most of Spacey’s alleged victims were also lured into a trap. What’s worse is that he seems to allegedly target younger male victims. If these were 14-year-olds cornered in Spacey’s room, “fight or freeze” moment would mostly end up in “freeze.”

The other difference on these two cases are the names who confessed. Weinstein had big Hollywood names like Angelina Jolie supporting other alleged victims. Meanwhile, Rapp appears to be the only one who openly admitted to the alleged assault. Others are remaining anonymous because of “fear or repercussions.”

Spacey, however good of an actor he is, should face the consequences of his alleged actions the same way Weinstein is doing right now. These may be different circumstances, but the lack of big names supporting Rapp’s claims should not deter the fact that Spacey was allegedly assaulting victims and making unwanted sexual advances to other younger actors and production crews.

If you cannot forgive Weinstein for allegedly luring in actresses while he comes out with a bath robe, asking them to massage each other, then you should not ignore the fact that Spacey allegedly has a special eye for young boys.

Who knows? This might all just be an act for Hollywood’s legendary Kevin Spacey.
