Why Elon Musk Will Offer A 30-Minute Transatlantic Flight, Plus Moon And Mars Migration [Opinion]

Elon Musk founder of SpaceX and Tesla

Elon Musk’s new plan to use his SpaceX technology to handle basic airline traffic is nothing short of genius as SpaceX gears up to put mankind on Mars in seven years. Musk is both a businessman and a scientist, with an amazing track record of making science practical and profitable.

Elon Musk owns both SpaceX and Tesla, and both companies are rapidly solving the world’s problems. Elon already created self-driving electric cars and batteries that can efficiently store energy from the sun to power massive electric grids, as well as small solar batteries for home use.

Now, SpaceX founder Elon Musk is planning transcontinental flights on his BFR hypersonic spacecraft, according to the Washington Post. Why is Elon Musk’s plan brilliant? There are many scientific and business-minded benefits to Elon’s plans.

First, Elon Musk’s transatlantic flights are creating a purpose for hypersonic spacecraft like BFR, beyond space travel and Mars flights. This multipurpose, real-world use will make mass production of SpaceX rockets profitable and thus bring down the cost per rocket-ship to build.

Second, Elon Musk’s SpaceX air travel will facilitate the testing of SpaceX rockets. The SpaceX ships will be tested far more extensively by using them on everyday flights than they ever could in costly, traditional testing, as NASA did.

Third, Elon Musk’s plan is perfect for training pilots and crew. This way, by the time Elon Musk is ready to man a voyage to Mars with passengers, it will be possible to find many experienced SpaceX pilots. It would be a crew no other space program could have imagined. Could there be stewardesses bound for Mars?

Fourth, migrating to Mars is not only exciting, it sounds a bit terrifying. However, if Elon Musk’s potential passengers on the SpaceX flight to Mars are accustomed to flying on a SpaceX spacecraft, then they will be far more comfortable boarding that historic flight to Mars, and thus there is far less potential for panic.

Fifth, while Elon Musk’s flights will be economical, especially for those who say time is money, they will still turn a profit for SpaceX. That profit can be used to fund other aspects of the Mars mission.

Sixth, Elon Musk if filling a human need in an affordable way, at least for some. Tickets for a hypersonic SpaceX flight to China will be only $2,900 one way, according to Bloomberg. Still, under some circumstances, a SpaceX flight could be well worth the extra cost.

Admittedly, one can get a roundtrip economy airline tickets from many U.S. cities to Beijing for around $400, according to Justfly. Still, this could be a great offer for celebrities, doctors, attorneys, and ranking upper management business class, who might choose SpaceX over a private jet, because their time is worth more than the cost of the ticket.

Lastly, Elon Musk’s high-speed flights could also be a lifesaver in terms of emergencies. Evacuations, medical emergencies, or even reuniting families in times of personal crisis could make SpaceX a life-saving option.
